Pulpit Rock by Astrobuck This is an unusual rock formation located right off Interstate 25 behind the Pike's Peak Harley Davidson Store in Colorado Springs. When I first saw it on a road trip in 1990, I thought it was one of the most awesome sights. However, as I found out when I moved here, the REAL awesome sight is from the top! You can see for miles. I'll post a pic from the top soon. If you want to visit it for yourself, follow these directions: Take I-25 North to the Woodmen Road Exit. Take a right at the light. Follow the road to the next light, Vincent Drive. Take another right. Follow the road around, past the Nissan Dealership, until you reach a set of green buildings on the left. Take a left on the street past the buildings (Dublin). Follow Dublin until you reach Pulpit Rock Drive. Take a right and follow it to the end. The trailhead is at the coldesack. The trail is easy, but the climb up to and on top of Pulpit Rock is moderate to difficult. Be careful when you walk on top. Some areas have steep drop-offs of several feet. Leave a Comment

This used to be the path the railroad took to Cripple Creek during the 1800's. After the railroad diminished, the tracks were taken up, but the path still remained. It was then opened to highway traffic until the 1980's when one of the old railroad tunnels caved in. Today, it is used by hikers, bikers, and runners. Part of the road is still open, but you have to drive out of the way to get to it. This is the collapsed tunnel. Leave a Comment

by Astrobuck This is THE trail of all trails. Located in Manatou Springs near the Cog Railroad, this trail is VERY steep. I hiked it the other day, and let me tell you, it is HARD! It's unbelievable that people actually run this thing. If you run it, it will take you about 4-5 hours roundtrip from the base to Pikes Peak. If you hike it and take your time, 16 hours. Be sure you get plenty of rest..... Leave a Comment

by Astrobuck Hiking in Colorado is a real treat. Colorado has one of the 3 most famous hiking trails in the US, the Continental Divide Trail (The Appalachian Trail and Pacific Rim Trail are the other two...I have yet to try these). In any case, when you hike in Colorado, you will see things that some people have never seen before, and may never. You may find a trail that hasn't been used in years that leads to gorgeous scenery. You may also take a wrong turn that may lead you somewhere no one has ever been. In any case, hiking and camping in Colorado is one of the things that should be on everyone's life to do list. by Astrobuck This is another city park located in the city of Colorado Springs. This is one park that really looks out of place, considering it is right in the city. Numerous hiking trails and very dog friendly. The scenery here is absolutely gorgeous and it changes at every path you take. One path, you are looking into the valley, the next path, you are looking into the mountains. This place is a must see. Located on Vindicator drive between Rockrimmon and Centennial. Leave a Comment

Ten Mile Range rising above frozen Lake Dillon by mtncorg Really not off-the-beaten-path since I-70 goes right next to it. Denver used to get its water from the heights around Winter Park - you can see the pipes on the ski slopes - north of I-70 over Berthoud Pass (US 40). Denver has grown tremendously, but the city only averages around 17 inches a year. Lots of golf courses and house grass to water over there, so city fathers pushed through the Dillon Dam project which dams up from upper Colorado River tributaries - ie the Snake and Blue Rivers - and then sends water east under the Front Range to reservoirs on the South Platte River. Dillon Lake is a ver ypopular summer water resort though in recent years, water demand from the Front Range metroplex has sucked the lake dry leaving boat marina high and dry. This year might be similar with a low snowpack. Leave a Comment

Bristlecone pine high along the trail up Mt Elbert by mtncorg Mt Elbert at 14.433 feet, is the King of both the mighty Sawatch Range and of all of Colorado. A couple of trails will take you to its barren top. It is a hard hike - start early in the day to avoid afternoon thunderstorms and take lots of water. Remember to breathe deeply - the air up here is very thin! On the south side of Elbert, CO 82 runs over the very scenic Independence Pass -12095 feet high - among some of the highest mountains in Colorado, the back way into Aspen during the summertime. by Astrobuck This is a really nice park! It was really hot the day we went, but it was very pretty nonetheless. Located in the Black Forest of Central Colorado. There are numerous hiking trails, and there are also areas where you can go down into a canyon and explore!! Be sure to watch for Poison Ivy here, because it runs a little rampant. You can also rock climb here, if you want. There is a $5.00 US daily use fee payable at the gate. Leave a Comment

by Astrobuck This is a trail that some man envisioned (forgive me, I can't remember his name). In any case, this trail runs from the New Mexico border to the Wyoming border, and it interconnects all the towns and cities in between. I have biked this trail many times. It is tough to bike, but well rewarding from the scenery, as you can see here!! Part of the Front Range Trail is in the foreground. Leave a Comment

This area is full of rolling hills and prairie. Evidently, the settlers here in the 1800's called it "Greenland" well, because the area is so green. The Front Range Trail runs through this area. Located in Douglas County off I-25 Between Colorado Springs and Castle Rock. Leave a Comment
