Dress in Layers, and Keep it Simple

by j7286

It's cooler in the mountains than on the plains, so dress in layers as you ascend above 6,000 feet, even in the summertime. Don't forget to bring a jacket for the evening, the temperature will drop 20 degrees when the sun goes down. Best time for planning outdoor activities is before 4:00 pm -- late afternoon showers can be commonplace in the summer (unless we're having one of our drought years). Sturdy walking/hiking shoes if you're planning on visiting the mountains, and don't forget your socks. Best to wear long pants, not shorts, in the mountains, due to the possibility of tics. SUNSCREEN! The altitude is higher, and the air is thinner -- so the exposure to harm from the strong sunlight is increased, also. Even when there is snow on the ground, you can still get burned as the sun reflects off of it. BUG SPRAY if you're going to be outside a lot, that's a must, especially by any...

Prepare for the Outdoors

Good hiking shoes. Colorado style is very laid-back, athletic. Birkenstock's, Tevas, and the ugly Crocs!Make sure you have a light rain jacket in the summer. It can be sunny during the day and the storms will roll in during the evening. Sunscreen-At this high altitude you have a greater risk of sunburn even in the winter while skiing.Bug Spray-Colorado had a few cases of West Nile, why take the chance. Bring film for the amazing views in the mountains.

Chilly in August

by phastphreddy

You're always going to be able to find chilly weather in this state, even in the middle of the summer. Granted, you're going to have to climb way up into the mountains to do so, but that's exactly what you're going to want to do anyway. So just make sure that, when you travel here in the summertime, you at least pack a sweater or a light jacket.

In the Summertime

by MandaJ320

Even in the summertime you need to bring warm clothes. Temperatures can change 40 degrees or so when you change your elevation. Before driving into the mountains, it was 80 something degrees. But once we started getting higher, the temperature dropped into the 40's within twenty minutes!!!

Colorado high attitude will remind about itself

Always have a bottle of water with yourself, because dry air of Colorado will push you to have drinks more than you do this as always. I don't mean drinks in the bar, because sometimes we have more than always and then we regret about it :-)))

Layers..the key to warmth.

Suticase big enough for snowpants and other snowgear. Cold weather/snow gear/ ski-snowboard gear. A very good mositurizer, aloe vera in case you get sunburn or windburn. Good Ski Coat, Gloves, usual ski gear. Skis however there are plenty of places to rent them.

Some List

Skies, slades for winter, bycicle, roller blades and sport shoes for summer time Something warm and comfortable for skiingGood bycicle pants and gloves for bycicle ridingGear for roller blades Tapes, bands, because maybe you will fell a lot, but be careful anyway Which will be pretty good for taking panorama pictures Don't take care much of swimming suites, because I doubt you will find much water here

Packing List

While I was living in Colorado, we had a saying, 'if you don't like the weather, wait ten minutes'. So, wear layers so you can shed them off or pile them on easily. If you head into the mountains in the early spring of fall, be cautious of this quickly changing weather. In short, buy good gear, be prepared, and you never regret it.

Be casual. This is the West. Golden is especially a casual town and unless you are here on business or planning a trip to a special restaurant, think wholesome outdoorsy. Lightweight hiking shoes or good sneakers will get you almost anywhere, as will jeans. The weather is infamously variable, so plan on layering anytime of the year. It can snow in July. Don't neglect sunscreen and sunglasses. The UV at this altitude can be brutal and it is sunny 300 days a year. If you are camping, it can get pretty cool at night and if you go high in the mountains it will be cool always, so bring a lightweight jacket and some clothes to layer underneath in the summer.
