Things to Do

Camping at Blue Lakes Trailhead

Camping at Blue Lakes Trailhead, Ridgway

uaamom Says:  Blue Lakes Trailhead is 10 miles in off the highway and you cross some private land but don't be put off by the No Trespassing Signs, just keep going. You end up behind the Double RL Ranch and at the edge of the local wilderness. After a wet June, early July there was lush...

Hunting

Hunting, Ridgway

tremendopunto Says:  Hunting season is a big thing here. Larry gave me the chance to come along with him. I must say you need a lot of patience walking through the deep snow or waiting for hours for some movement. Most of the time you just enjoy the beautiful landscape and you return without...

deer watching

deer watching, Ridgway

tremendopunto Says:  On our way to do skiing we met plenty of deer that werent that shy at all. But wait for hunting season.....

Horse Riding

Horse Riding, Ridgway

tremendopunto Says:  To complete the cowboy-feeling in the wild west I just had to do some horse riding. I really loved speedying with the horse since they get into this smooth rythm on high speed. But one thing horses dont think of when walking under a tree is that there is someone taller...

Trekking around Mt.Sneffels

Trekking around Mt.Sneffels, Ridgway

tremendopunto Says:  Mt.Sneffels is highest peak around the Dallas Devide with 14150 feet. It is such a beautiful landscape with mountain lakes you should not miss it! It is best to reach from the Ouray side. For the most pittoresque mountain lakes you have to cross the Blue Lkes Pass...

Watch a RODEO!

Watch a RODEO!, Ridgway

tremendopunto Says:  What else but a Rodeo is missing for the real wild west feeling? Of course they have that too. The complete town was up for that. The funniest thing was the sheep rodeo for the small kids though! These little cowboys and cowgirls were put on sheeps and...

Telluride

Telluride, Ridgway

tremendopunto Says:  I Tell-u-ride away: this is a great mountain hideaway and a fantastic ski resort for nordic, alpine and telemark skiing in winter!

Ouray - the Switzerland of America

Ouray - the Switzerland of America, Ridgway

tremendopunto Says:  Ouray was named one of the most pittoresque cities by the Sunset Magazine, calling it the "Gem of the Rockies". Another popular comparison is the name "Switzerland of America". Ouray really offers a lot: sparkling waterfalls, soothing natural springs (especially nice during...

Famous steam powered Silverton-Durango Railway

Famous steam powered Silverton-Durango Railway, Ridgway

tremendopunto Says:  This is a famous steam powered narrow gauge railway connecting Silverton with Durango. These 45 miles through spectacular canyons are quite popular for tourists who enjoy this historic train.Trains go from May to October, plus a special winter train in December. An advance...

Camping

Camping, Ridgway

tremendopunto Says:  This wonderful countryside just calls you for camping - and what can be better than a nice fire at night and some burned marshmellows?

Climbing up Courthouse Mountain

Climbing up Courthouse Mountain, Ridgway

tremendopunto Says:  Courthouse Mountain is a great trekking peak from where you have a nice view over the valleys and the town of Ridgeway. You can see this mountain also in John Waynes "The True Grit".

Golf on a beautiful table mountain

Golf on a beautiful table mountain, Ridgway

tremendopunto Says:  There is a great golf course situated on top of a table mountain - this is really spectacular! Plus I saw a herd of deer crossing my range, the complete course fit so well into nature, it did not feel artificial at all.About golf, I must say I was just a mini-golfer before....

Snowboarding and skiing

Snowboarding and skiing, Ridgway

tremendopunto Says:  We went snowboarding in Telluride - very close to Ridgway. It was my first time on a snowboard during this time, but yes, it was a heck of a fun.....after I got the curves ;-)

Orvis Hot Springs: Sleep or soak when you choose

Orvis Hot Springs: Sleep or soak when you choose, Ridgway

uaamom Says:  Rooms available and campground too! The hot springs are open to overnight guests 24 hours a day. Nice shared full kitchen so you can bring your own which is a good idea for a few meals since food in the area is pricey and mostly unremarkable. 7 choices of pools, plus sauna...

True Grit restaurant

Named after the John Wayne movie and featuring tons of memorabilia along the walls and ceiling. The place was packed, but then again, this is a pretty small town.

Off The Beaten Path

Ridgway

Ridgway, Ridgway

goingsolo Says:  A great spot to stop and contemplate. During November, especially in the middle of the week, this park is practically deserted. Except for the deer and other wildlife.

Scenic Ridgway

Scenic Ridgway, Ridgway

goingsolo Says:  Ridgway state park is surrounded by striking and diverse beauty. The Sneffels Range rises to the park's south while the Cimmaron range looms in the distance to the east. Heading west out of Ridgway, the relatively flat (especially for Colorado) Uncompahgre Plateau stretches...

Ridgway State park fishing

Ridgway State park fishing, Ridgway

goingsolo Says:  FIshing is one of the main attractions here. Some of the best trout fising is found within this park. These wooden bridges lead to fishing spots along the river .

Exploring Ridgway State Park

Exploring Ridgway State Park, Ridgway

goingsolo Says:  There really isn't much hiking in this park. There are several short trails which lead to the river, but that's all I was able to find. I wouldn't recommend this area to anyone looking to do any serious hiking, but its still a nice spot to get out and stretch your legs a...

Ridgway State Park

Ridgway State Park, Ridgway

goingsolo Says:  Ridgway State Park is 22 miles south of Montrose along Hwy 550. It is one of the newer state parks. Most of the park's activities center around the Ridwgay Reservoir, but there are an additional 2,000 acres of land within the park's boundaries. Short trails lead out from the...
