    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Originally a copper mine in the early 1700's, this site served as a prison for Tories and British Loyalists during the American Revolution. Following that war the Olde Newgate Prison became the first state prison in the United States and later held Confederate prisoners during the Civil War. Upon entering the mine notice the metal loops protruding from the rocks; instead of being locked in cells prisoners were chained to the rocks. As you tour the perpetualy 50 degree 'room' you'll have no trouble imagining how horrid life must have been for the men imprisoned here.
