Mystic Local Customs

Lobsterfest is held over Memorial Day weekend (last weekend in May) under Mystic Seaport's open-air boat shed on the banks of the Mystic River.

Chowderfest - You can choose from clear or creamy, clam or corn chowder and take in the lovely New England Autumn foliage. The fest is held over Columbus Day weekend in October.

Gifts are always appreciated, and a tip jug will be passed for the crew. Instead of money, though, I gave them something special, real pieces of eight! Spanish Reals of this era are plentiful, and may be had at a coin show. The ones I got were well worn, and had many "chop" marks. About $20 apiece. The crew went wild over them.

When travelling, I always take a journal as well as my camera. Write in it faithfully each day. Then when you are home, re-write it with an ear for adventure. Make characters. Ray a farmer from Pennsylvania became "Rey, a tall thin Spainard, dark complected, with long black hair, and a stiletto beard."
