  • Sterling Library Interior

by zChris Written May 27, 2003

Even more stunning than the facade of the library is its glorious interior. Soaring to cathedralesque heights, the central passageway does not fail to instill inspiration. Religious themes are continued throughout the building, truly a "cathedral for learning."

    Sterling Memorial Library

The exquisitely detailed facade of Sterling Memorial Library hints at the treasures contained within. Sunken in the plaza afront Sterling is the Cross Campus Library, visible through glass panels from above.

    Sterling Memorial Library

Cross Campus is a monumental centrepiece to Yale's campus. Designed in the 1920s as a major expansion of the school, it incorporates the main library as well as buildings of other functions. Its sheer monumentality contrasts sharply with the intimacy of the older portions of the campus. The impression upon entering Cross Campus is one of the same beholding of awe some often exhibit when visiting the gargantuan monoliths of Washington's Mall.

    Path through Campus

I am convinced that Yale University is the only reason for New Haven's continuing existence. Barely prospering more than its neighbours (which are devoid of such prestigious institutions) the city's saving grace is the architectural glamour and monumentality of Yale, which manages (in an astounding feat) to compose more of the city centre than parking lots and ramps. Many of the university's famed residential colleges are exclusive and can only be accessed through locked gates by the students and faculty who live within them, but there are many wonderful areas available for access by the general public as well, such as this prototypical slice of the yellow-stoned central campus area, known as Cross Campus.

    Sengbe Pieh

The Amistad incident is the story of a group of slaves who revolted and captured their ship, the Amistad. They were eventually seized off the coast of New Englan. The captives eventually won their freedom in a case before the United States Suprere Court.

Here is a sketch of Sengbe Pieh, the leader of the slaves who revolted.

It seems that all school children in the New Haven area wind up at the Peabody Museum at one time or another.
The museum has a lot of natural history scenes, plus one of the largest dinosaur skelons I've ever seen. I think it's a brontosauraus, and it is huge.

A visit to the New Haven Colony Historical Society museum provides artifacts and exhibits from the time of New Haven's esstablishment as an English colony back in the early 1600's.
I like historical museums, and this is a good one right in my hometown.

The Peabody Museum smelled musty and old, but the exhibits were cool and the building itself was exquisite. If you love dinosaurs, Egyptian art, or stuffed animals, you'll love this place.

Driving around New Haven in the Yale district drives you batty, but a walk around would be ideal. The architecture is something out of a "Harry Potter" movie.

Beautiful campus, nice if you want to sit around and read or people watch. I've noticed most of the students all dress the same, talk about cloning;)

    Connecticut Hall

The oldest building on campus, Connecticut Hall, is a classic 18th century Georgian structure typical of New England colleges and universities. The statue in the foreground is of Yale's founder.
