New London Restaurants

  • Great Chain Restaurant

$5 in July 2014. The Outback Restaurant was located in the same parking area as my motel, so when I got hungry later at night that was a natural stop. I had not had dinner because I had a large, late lunch but needed something so I opted for their Signature Baked Potato Soup which was quite good. Outback consistently serves good food. Hours are 4...

  • Varied Menu; Average Food

$12 as of July 2014. This is a casual place with a varied menu that includes seafood, some steak and chicken dishes, burgers, pasta and more. There are a variety of beers and wines too. Full bar co-located. The food was average at best; my waitress, Rebecca, was very good though. Hours are 7 AM to 10 PM daily. The meatloaf was actually kinda...

  • Check Out The Bartenders

This is not a place that I have been, merely glimpsed from the train, but the signage at the back of the pub/restaurant intrigued me. I don't know if it will be legible on the photo here but on the RHS the sign says: "EAT HERE; FEEL GOOD" and on the LHS (partially obscured): "WARM BEER, LOUSY FOOD & THE BLUES".Googling for details I found several...

  • The Highways are treacherous, especially...

New London is a town along the Connecticicut shoreline. Most of the town lies south of a very dangerous freeway called I-95. I call it " Deathtrap 95 " . The freeway on and off ramps are haphazardly placed with confusing signs. Be careful driving to New London. If you miss the exit you'll have to drive over the largest bridge in Connecticut, the...

Do not drink and drive in New London. Period.... you will get arrested for sure. Many of my friends have done time for DUI, which is driving under the influence of alcohol. The Police swarm on any offender in this town, no matter how small the offence. There are usually 10 or 15 squad cars in the downtown area at any time. At night these old buildings and the fog that rolls in off the Thames can make this town look like a seedy coastal ghetto, but its actually very safe; because of all the cops on patrol. But still, if you have to drive at night, do it stone cold sober.

New London Off The Beaten Path

  • Pequot Avenue Lighthouse

..or the New London Harbor Light. When I read the description of how to get there, I did not think I would visit this lighthouse.Lighthouse Friends page says "The keeper's residence is privately owned, and the grounds are not open to the public. In fact, during our visit, there was a "No Trespassing and No Photographs Sign" at the entrance to the...

  • New London Ledge Lighthouse

Under COnstructionwith its square red brick quarters topped with a mansard roof and a circular lantern room, is one of the most striking and unusual-looking lighthouses in the United States. Local residents reportedly did not want to gaze out to sea at a structure that would be out of place among their large and historic homes; hence the Colonial...
