The few times we have visited Norwalk has been by car. Getting to Norwalk from our home is easy and convient and just an hour drive north on I-95.
Driving gives us the freedom to arrive at any time, stay as long as we like and leave at our leisure.
Norwalk is easily accessible from NYC (via Grand Central Terminal) or other stops along the New Haven Line and if you decide to travel on MetroNorth the station stop I would recommend to disembark on is the South Norwalk Station. The ride from NYC is about 45 minutes. Prices vary on time (peak or off peak) and whether you purchase ticket on board or at the station or one of the many vending machines.
If you travel off peak the one way price for an adult is $9.75 and the RT $19.50 (purchased in advance). Children are usually 1/2 the adult fare.

If you haven't got a motorcycle the best way to go might be the train. Norwalk is a stop on the New Haven line. Parking is at a premium during Oyster fest, other times it is not a problem. If you are going to the oyster fest or the aquarium, then take the south Norwalk station stop. Check the website to apply for a bicycle pass to bring your bike on the train.
