The Black Bear Saloon: Enjoying an Evening Snack and some Lacrosse
The Black Bear Saloon is a chain with locations in Stamford, Milford, Norwalk and White Plains. It's a bar/restuarant with outdoor seating in the summer months. We usually frequent the Milford and Norwalk locations more often but I like this place since it is smaller in size.
Our most recent visit here was to grab something to eat. We had just checked into the Hampton Inn and decided to take a walk in search of food. It was a short 5 minute walk from the hotel. The place was basically dead except for a few tables outside. We had a seat at a booth inside just to escape the heat. Liz and I felt like snack food and not entrees which is not a problem here. The menu has a large variety of pub grub, appetizers and main entrees to chose from.
After ordering drinks; a club sode for Liz and a Sprite for me we decided to share a few appetizers. We ordered the Spinach & Artichoke Dip, Mozzarella Sticks and a side or tater tots (for me..I love tots). Our food arrived very quickly and was extremely hot...we had to wait a few minutes before digging in.
As always the spinach dip here is killer. I love the creaminess of the dip along with the garlic bread, pita wedges and tortilla chips for dipping. The mozzarella sticks were very good and crispy. The tots were a bit too greasy for me as they were fried and the ones I eat at home are baked.
We decided to indulge in some dessert as well and ordered cheesecake for me and apple crisp for Liz. They were our of my favorite dessert: the chocolate lava cake. Dessert here is always good and I loved my cheesecake. The food here is very good and up to the standard we expect from this chain.
**I have never used the restroom here but my wife has remarked on how dingey and gross the ladies room is. Needless to say she avoids it when we are here at all costs.**

For a very authentic Irish pub right in downtown Stamford, head over to Playwright Pub. There are also branches in Manhattan and Hamden, CT, which means that it barely passes my no-chains allowed rule.
Excellent happy hour, great draft Guiness, very good pub and dinner food. This could also be an excellent choice for lunch or even dinner only. They have live Irish music at various times during the week. Right down the street from my apartment, too!

One very cool place is the Temple Bar, which is done up in a druidic theme. It is very crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, and they usually have both a band and DJ.
Walking distance from my apartment is one big reason! Good crowd as well.
Dress Code: Typical Friday / Saturday night wear. Nothing TOO fancy, but you don't want to weat ripped or tattered clothes.

A good club in downtown is Hula Hank's. It's a bit upscale, but they have very nice music.
Dress Code: Very smart, dress nicely.
