Mohegan Sun has plenty of gaming, shoping, dining, entertainment and fun for just about any one. I like the atmosphere and layout better than Foxwoods. The shops are considerably nicer than Foxwoods and they have a nicer selection of bars, lounges and restaurants. The different casinos have their own theme and decor which makes it fun to walk around and take in the design. Mohegan Sun also has an area for shows and concerts which makes this a nice destination to see your favorite performer.
Mohegan Sun is our choice of Casino in Connecticut. We ofen find ourselves here with family or friends for a day away, an overnight stay or a weekend adventure. The hotel here is excelent and we love staying on site when the price is right. The variety of restaurants range from quick service, table service to a gourmet sit down dinner. We enjoy Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville, The Dubliner, Sol Toro, Burger Bistro, Summer Shack, Burber Palace, Frank Pepe's and Bubba's BBQ to name a few. Shopping here is great and I enjoy Tommy Bahama for clothes while Liz loves Tiffany's and Lush.
We've seen some excellent shows here at Mohegan at the Arena and the Wolf Den. The venues are nice and they keep the crowds well controlled so all can enjoy the show.
Why come to a casino if you don't throw a little money at a table game or a slot machine. We'd both rather spend our money shopping, drinking or having a meal but we do occasionally spend some money gambling but never go overboard.
Our last visit Liz threw $10 into a slot machine and wond up winning a nice jackpot. It was her first time winning at a Casino. We just collected the winning voucher and walked away from the machine; why try our luck further when there is a nice cash amount in hand.
Wombi Rock is a huge structure of onyx and alabaster in the Casino of the Sky. You can't miss the large illuminated structure juting out from the casino floor and into the air. One of our favorite lounges Leffingwells is in Wombi Rock and overlooks the casino.
The Taughannick Falls are 55 foot high indoor waterfalls. The waterfalls represent the crossing of the Mohegan tribes migration through some treacherous falls.
It's also a nice spot to grab a drink at the bar at the base of the falls, people watch or have a meal at Tuscany.
The Casino of the Wind is the newest of the casinos at Mohegan Sun. There is slot machines, table games and a poker room with daily tournaments. We like to wander this particular casino especially by the 35 foot hight electronic water fall.
Our most recent visit to this casino with Liz, my brother in law and his girlfriend; Liz decided to try her luck. On her last spin (on only $10) she won. She had no idea how mucha nd the money amount kept rolling up on the slot machine. It was only $250 but not bad off of $10. I told her to take the voucher and walk away from the machine....we later enjoyed some food and drinks on the casino.
Casino of the Sky is a really beautiful casino. It is here where you will find the Planetarium, the Wobi Rock as well as the usual table and slot machines.
You can find some really good places to eat and also one of our favorite places to grab a drink, Leffingwells a really nice Martini Bar.
Casino of the Wind is the oldest of the three casinos found here at Mohegan Sun, and it shows. There are plenty of table games, slots and restaurants to keep anyone busy. There is also the Wolf's Den for live entertainment as well as an animatronic wolf perked up on a moutain.
I've noticed that this is the busiest of the casinos especially with those individuals arriving on "bus". I have also noticed that of the three casinos, this is also the "smokiest" section where most people are smokers.
It is my least favorite casino of the three because of these reasons.
The Wolf Den is a venue for live bands located at the Casino of the Wind where you can enjoy some really good entertainment, free of charge.
There is limited seated and it is suggested you arrive early to secure a seat. During the weekends you can often find a line stretching out at least 50 people deep waiting to be seated. The shows start at 8:00 pm prompt so make sure you secure yourself a seat at least 1/2 hour before.
During our recent visit Kris and I decided to stop by for a drink and watch the show, we arrived at about 7:40 pm and didn't have to wait too long to be seated. We made it inside just before the show was about to begin. We had a great time enhoying a drink and the show.
Okay, so you are DEFINITELY not allowed to take any photographs on the gaming floor, especially the poker room, but I happen to sneak this pic in, shame on me.
The Poker Room at the Mohegan Sun isn't as big as the one in Foxwoods, but visually it is much nicer.
If you want to play a few hands of poker you should "register" as soon as you enter the room and you will then be either called (if there is a waiting time) or you will be taken to a table where there is an empty seat.
You must have at leat $120 in chips, and you must make sure you have that before you sit at the table. If you go bust and want to buy back in, you can then buy your chips at the table you're playing at.
The casinos are now focusing on more than gambling and this is evident in Mohegan Sun. Although there is a limited amount of things for children to do (the arcade is about it), there is plenty for non-gamblers to enjoy a few hours other than gambling.
There is plenty of casual and fine dining, high end shops and inexpensive shops, there are many bars and places to enjoy a drink as well as the Arena where you can watch an event or watch the Suns play.
On my most recent visit I did notice more families than usual. There were so many strollers, young children running around, parents just strolling along the shopping area and young adults looking for places to chill.
This was Kris and Jon's (as well as Leo's) first time at Mohegan Sun and Jon had a good time learning to play poker with Ferni while Kris and I did some shopping, then he watched Leo while Kris and I enjoyed a little drink at one of my favorite bars. We all had a really nice time.
We wandered into Kid's Quest to give Leo (and his dad) some distraction. It's an aracade that also has sitting services from ages 6 weeks to 12 years old (who would be sick enough to live a child of 6 weeks is beyond me, but they provide the service should it be needed. The rate is from 6 weeks to 36 months $9.50 hour and from 37 months to 12 years old $8.50 hour.
The arcade portion is a good way to distract and have the young one spend some time. There are all sorts of the usual arcade games and of course the prizes you can get with certain levels of tickets. You must purchase a card with a monetary amount on it and you swipe the card at all the games. Once you are done, you insert the tickets at a ticket eater and swipe your card and it will automatically count it and put in on the card, so when you are ready to get the prizes, they don't have to count the tickets.
We had a great time watching Leo running around playing skeeball, basketball and riding the cars and motorcycles.
Most people how come to Mohegan Sun are here to try their luck at either the slots or tables. If you are here to do a bit of gambling make sure to know your limit and try sticking to it.
For slot playing, walk around the floor and check out the winning odds which can vary from machine to machine. There is a very large selection of slots to play and everyone usually has their favorite. Along with the slots you have your table games like blackjack, roullette, poker, and a variety of others.
I'm quite cheap when it comes to spending my money on gambling, so I usually play either the .1 or .5 slots and usually only about $40 maximum.
Ferni plays at the "sit and go" poker tables and will usually sit with at least $220 which does last him upto 8 hours. Definitely can't play the slots that long that amount of money, so the poker tables are a better deal for your money.
Our last concert at Mohegan Sun was .38 Special, REO Speedwagon and Styx. Liz's friend Jo got us awesome front row tickets. The show was incredible and the arena was packed. Being in the front row was incredible, the sound, the view and the excitement. Joe, Carol, Liz and I had a blast. The bands were so energetic and were interacting with the fans. We had some intersting older women in our row who were flashing breasts for guitar picks.....it was hysterical....Liz and Carol couldn't stop laughing since they were getting guitar picks for just standing there. The bands played some our their classic and popular tunes and well as some Beatles classics. It was an fun night with my baby and our friends.
The Casino of the Earth has table games, slot machines and a smoke free enclosed room for the non-smoking set. This Casino focuses on the Earth element and has various animatronic wolves perched about as if to guard the casino. The Casino of the Earth has various lounges, bars and eating areas. The Wolf Den is located in the Casino of the Earth and is a great place to catch a show.
The Mohegan Sun arena is a 10,000 seat entertainment venue. Concerts, comedians, WWE wrestling and basketball events are held here. We have been fortunate to see some great musical acts here such as: Fleetwood Mac, Reo Speedwagon, Styx and .38 Special.
