Clean safe place to go for vacation
A little costly
great place to relax with the kids
You might expect to see a totem pole in nearly every city in Alaska, but to find one at the entrance to a beach town in southeast Delaware was definitely unexpected! Not only that, but Bethany Beach's has a most unusual story behind it.Though it may look a little like a "Father Christmas" carving, this totem was carved to resemble "Chief Little...more
I love to read and sometimes there is nothing more relaxing than placing yourself on the beach under an umbrella with a good book while also enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of the ocean. If you are on a tight budget, the South Coastal Library in Bethany Beach might be the ticket. They sell used books but a temporary library card can be had...more
Tucked into the far southeast region of Delaware's coastline, "Bethany Beach" is one of many beach towns popular with tourists both south and north of it. It's a tiny, little gem blessed with a wide expanse of white sand beach bordered by replenished sand dunes and a nice boardwalk. Bethany Beach's boardwalk is just that---mainly a nice walkway...more

After quite a long drive down to Bethany Beach, we were more than ready for lunch when we arrived. We found a parking place pretty quickly only a block from the beach and spotted the sign for Mango's which was located on the second level of a building which was located directly next to the Boardwalk. The restaurant still had plenty of seats...more
Maureen's Ice Cream and Desserts had a cute, little storefront right on Garfield Parkway, and after the so-so lunch at Mango's we thought we deserved a little ice cream. Maureen's, which had a slight resemblance to an old-fashioned Ice Cream Parlour, had about 15-20 flavors of ice cream, many of which sounded great, but I decided on the coconut,...more
Ryan and I took the Trolley from Dewey Beach to Rehoboth beach just to spend several hours wetting out pallets with amazing beer. We started off with a little taster, and followed through with a delicious burger that was paired up well with their Porter Beer. Highly recommend this place if you are in RB. Uhhmmm.....beer !!!more
There is no night life in Bethany Beach and the locals are really proud of that. They like them some quiet, and have the cops to enforce it. Very nice family town. One of the few towns you can let the kids go walk around even at night.
There is no night life what so ever in this town. Walk on the beach, play cards, get to bed early. If you want bars, babes, and boardwalk crowds, go to Ocean City MD.
Dress Code: Must not be naked. This is a family beach.
"The quiet resort" is their motto. So be quiet if you go. They like that.
As noted in my "General" tip, parking in beachfront towns is often difficult. However, the town of Bethany Beach has done a so much better job than most in providing parking for daytrippers and summer rental visitors.Even better than that, Bethany Beach provides residents and visitors alike, the Bethany Beach Blue Trolleys and what a bargain they...more
The closest airport to this area is PHI which is about 135 miles. There you would have to rent a car. Bethany Beach is also completely unserved by trains - no passenger trains at all and not even any close freight train stops. Even in the "old days" there was no train. One was promised, but was not built. The closest was the Rehoboth train station....more
As with nearly all beach and resort towns, there are plenty of shops mixed with plenty of small restaurants. I thought Bethany Beach's shopping blocks were nicer than most and had a good variety of stores. However, most the most prevalent type of shop sold toys, beachwear and t-shirts. Labor Day weekend is a particularly good time to shop because...more
They have it all, t-shirts, sweat shirts, beach chairs, hats...you name it. This is a one stop shop for you souvenir needs folks. Cups posters, beach house stuff, ships, towels, shells, what does Aunt Martha want? We like to buy a nice short or long sleeve shirt in every resort town. When we travel, we always pack them and wear the same town on...more

Every year for nearly 25 years now, residents and visitors of Bethany Beach have "mourned" the passing of Summer in a very unique way---they hold a "Jazz Funeral Parade" in New Orleans fashion on Labor Day weekend! The brainchild of a local resident, the "fun" funeral marked the fact that most shops, restaurants and facilities would be closing up...more
Eat a nice breakfast, pack a lunch if you want to and sit on the beach all day. You will need sun screan, chairs & or blanket, drinks, SUN BLOCK , look, you need a lot of stuff to do this right! I love the beach. I could listen to the waves, the gulls, and the people laughing and talking all day. It is a life long tradition for me and mine!more
Totally agree with the above statements. I have been a year-round resident of the "Quiet Resorts" for the past two years, and they aren't too darn quiet in the summer! I am a northern DE native...and even I cannot take the traffic at times! But...after labor Day.... it's heaven here. I agree about the riptides...I am a serious boogie boarder, and I...more
The day we visited Bethany Beach, there was a strong wind blowing and you could see there was a lot of wave action, though no white caps. Bethany Beach provides lifeguards up & down the beach which is great. However, read the beach sign about surviving rip tides and use caution!! I was brought up around the Chesapeake Bay and local beaches, so I...more
Honestly, almost every shop in this town is overpriced and understated. You're money will not go far here. If your kids like surfer dude stuff, this place is gonna set you back big time. Mucho Denaro
Unique Suggestions: Limit their budget before entrance.
Fun Alternatives: Go to the outlets in Rehoboth DE on the way home.
Luggage and bags:
Beach Towel, umbrella, cooler.
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: A hat is good, but it is usually very wind at the beach.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: What you need. Do you.
Photo Equipment: C'mon, you know the drill.
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: No camping in Bethany, but up the road at Indian River Inlet, (book early).
Miscellaneous: There is no shade at this beach.
I have to have room to breath, stretch my arms. There are life guards in the summer. The best times are late June through September. This is a beach where it costs a lot to stay, but is worth the $$ for the breathing room.
In the old days, when the children were smaller, we used to go to Rehobeth and walk the boardwalk and play miniature golf. Now, we go and play golf on the real course. There is a public course in Bethany, which is called Salt Pond Jan 1 - Mar 22: $12.00 - 9 holes ~$18.00 for 18 holes Mar 23 - May 11: $14.00 - 9 holes ~ $20.00 - 18 holesMay 12 -...more
Wake up, put your shoes on and walk to the beach. Bring a bucket to sit on, and if you catch a fish, you can flip your seat over. A beach chair and and umbrella would be good too. You may need a license to fish on the beach. Bait, Fishing pole, Hat, Beer, (or coffee), sandwiches, sun glasses, the usual.more
The main drag (Route 1) in this area has marked bike lanes in both directions. These are well used by both locals and tourists. We biked around Assawoman bay (20 mile loop). Once you turn off of route 20 or 26 the roads are very rural and have little traffic.more
As parking goes in beach towns on the East Coast, I've seen a lot worse than that in Bethany Beach. In fact, I think the town has done a darn good job of trying to provide parking options for visitors for a town of its small size. The major road entering town is Garfield Parkway which is two-ways divided by a large median. Garfield Parkway runs...more
These are the fences that Delaware puts up to protect the beach and dunes from erosion. They do help and seem to stay there for a while, so it must work, Right? Well it adds to a photo op! The dunes are protect and are not to be walked on, so please be careful, Cape Henlopen has dunes for walking on and exploring, BIG ONES.more
