Lewes
Lewes is the earliest European settlement in Delaware, and boasts that it is the "First Town in the First State." (Delaware's nickname is the First State because it was the first of the original Thirteen Colonies to ratify the United States Constitution). Nowadays, Lewes is a pleasant seaside village located at the point where Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. The town is separated from the open ocean by Cape Henlopen, which is now protected as a state park. During the summer months, Lewes is a popular seaside resort among visitors mainly from the Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. areas, who are attracted by the area's fine sandy beaches.
