Lewes

by traveldave

Lewes is the earliest European settlement in Delaware, and boasts that it is the "First Town in the First State." (Delaware's nickname is the First State because it was the first of the original Thirteen Colonies to ratify the United States Constitution). Nowadays, Lewes is a pleasant seaside village located at the point where Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. The town is separated from the open ocean by Cape Henlopen, which is now protected as a state park. During the summer months, Lewes is a popular seaside resort among visitors mainly from the Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. areas, who are attracted by the area's fine sandy beaches. In addition to the beach, other popular activities include sportfishing and pleasure boating. Lewes also has a compact historical district with well-preserved buildings from its early days, and interesting museums which highlight the...

Dover

by traveldave

Delaware's capital and second-largest city after Wilmington, Dover was founded by William Penn in 1683 as a court town for the newly established Kent County. The town's site was chosen for its central location and for the relative security it afforded from British raiders who used the distant Delaware River to make forays into the interior of Delaware. In 1777, Dover became the state capital, which had previously been located in New Castle. Named after Dover, England, the town was centered around The Green (pictured here), a central square around which the important municipal buildings, inns, and taverns were built. The Green is the heart of historic Dover to this day, the center of the First State Heritage Park which contains such historical buildings as the Old State House, the Delaware Surpeme Court, the first home constructed in Dover, and the town's first tavern, among...

job market & housing

by lotsabeans

hi :) I am a native Delawarean & live in Newark . ( Go UD Blue Hens !! :) I'm not sure that now would be a good time to move to Delaware. Many of my friends and family are loosing their jobs due to the economy. The banking industry is unstable , Chrysler has closed and Avon will be closing it's Delaware plant in April or August. But , if you are looking to buy a home there are plenty available & sellers are bargaining so you will get a good deal. The job market will be very competitive in the coming months. But, if you have a degree you coud fair better than most. Delaware is a beautiful state with friendly people ,great beaches ,tax free shopping & all four seasons !! Hope this helps !! My family has always loved the beaches . We spent alot of time there as children with our extended family. Wonderful memories :) We have family and friends that own vacation homes down there now & we...

Driving Through Delaware

by JoePA05

Just a note, when driving through Delaware make sure you fill up on gas beforehand. I was heading to Rehoboth Beach from Wilmington but once I exited off of I-95 onto Route 1 South ,civilization pretty much died off and I couldn't find so much as a convenience store much less a gas station! I did take an exit heading towards Odessa that had a sign for services, but once I got off there still wasn't anything in sight and my fuel was running low as I drove through more farmland. I had to backtrack using someone's driveway as there wasn't even any small roads or shoulders to turn around on. I felt like at times I was driving through Kansas or somewhere out west.

Delaware is much nicer in the summer.

Hurry before they turn the whole museum grounds into another office complex we don't need.Once upon a time a French guy came her named Dupont. (Delaware starts with D because of Dupont). He built an empire that still exists today.www.hagley.lib.de.usthe library has a web site if you are interested. Come in the summer and go to the BEACH!!!

Indian River Inlet, a Delaware State Park. Covers bay and ocean. Under-toe not bad, no jelly fish (they are party poopers). No bugs! I like nature, (except for the buggy parts). Dad can fish, Mom can read and sun, kids swim in life guarded water. Nice sand. Snack bar is expensive, and NOT GOOD. Take a picnic lunch if possible. Showers, rest rooms, (very campy). You can pack a lunch in, just pack your trash out. Ummmmmm, Good Stuff. The beach of course.Check out our Rehoboth Beach page too!
