Take your pick on Main Street-there are places with live music, karaoke, djs, etc. On a Wednesday night, the Deer Park has Nacho night-very popular with the college crowd! I also recommend another college and local hangout-Grotto's Pizza, where you can get pizza, nachos, any drink you want from the bar, play pool, play the bar trivia games, and generally just hang out with your friends. Another local hangout is the Friendly's just down from the stadium on 896-get a sundae! Just pick up a local newspaper to see what is going on downtown on any given night.

Deer Park Tavern is a large, old, three-story building at the end of Main Street in downtown Newark. There are large porches on both the first and second floors with seating for dozens.
I visited on a Thursday when they had all you can eat chicken wings for about $9, and they offer Yuengling drafts for only $1.50 every night. Happy hour is from 3-7pm every night when they offer $1 off all menu items plus a free buffet.
I have also enjoyed a good dinner at Deer Park when I had a very good Chicken & Shrimp Stir Fry for $13.95.
The Deer Park Tavern was built in 1851 on the site where an earlier tavern stood since 1747. The original inn housed Mason and Dixon while they survey their famous boundary line, George Washington during the Revolutionary War, and later Edgar Allen Poe. Leave a Comment

There is a lot of histor in this establishment, as it dates back to the revolutionary war, as do many of the watering holes in Newark. Musicians from George Thoroughgood, to Bruce Springsteen, to Metallica, to Run DMC, to Dave Matthews Band have all played at the Stone Balloon.

Hit this bar on a weekend to catch a game and some Grotto pizza (a Delaware favorite). Great drink specials are available fairly often. Big 22 ounce Yuengling lagers are only $2.95 and single slices of cheese pizza, just $1! The crowd is a friendly mix of locals and students, so it's the type of bar and you can go to by yourself and end up meeting some cool folks. Close to campus and right on Main Street, the location makes it easy to visit.

Blue Hen Sports Den is a good spot to watch the game or the NASCAR race. Big 22 ounce Yuengling lagers are only $2.95 and single slices of cheese pizza, just $1! Despite its location on Main Street Newark, the place has a good mix of college students and locals of all ages. My favorite feature? Huge plate glass windows overlooking the street so you don't feel like you are sheltering in a cave. Like everywhere else in Delaware, no smoking.
