I don't like going to this area at night and growing worse in the day. Higher and higher drugs and shots fired in this area.

Newark is right on average for crime risk. It has low murder and rape rate but high burglary and theft rates for a city its size. So it averages out as average.
When you go to your hotel/motel, ask the desk clerk if there are any areas of the city to avoid. Use the latch-chain on your motel room when you are in it. Lock your car door and don't leave valuables out in view. Act like a Newarkian and not like a tourist.
Simple suggestions that will help you have a safe visit to Newark.
