    crime rate

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Wilmington has only 10 murders a year but has a rape every other week. There are 3 serious crimes committed every day in the Wilmington city limits. Many of those crimes are crimes against persons, usually done late at night. They also have 3 cars stolen every day.

So, when you are in the Wilmington area: lock your car doors, lock your hotel room and use the latch-chain; stay together in groups and do not travel in unfamiliar areas at night. Ask your hotel attendants which areas to avoid; they usually know the city fairly well.

The number of sex offenders registered in the Wilmington area is nearly 400; that is one sex offender for every 200 Wilmingtonians..... very scary odds!

Please use extreme care in the Wilmington area.

    Crime Scene

Change comes slowly, and to make the river front safe all of the time is impossible, (or so it seems by the scenery).
We suggest day trips only, it is still easy to cross over a few blocks into a dangerous part of town.

Leave nothing showing in your car.

Wilmington is safe enough as cities go. However, there is a non-confrontational criminal element that will help itself to your luggage, CD's, handbags, or whatever is visible through the windows of your parked car. Discourage them by showing nothing of interest.

do you want your money back?

Watch out for people who want to take your picture with you standing on the train tracks. They may have an ulterior motive...
