    The Museum Store

    Wonderful shop, rather large. This place has everything from plant to candles and keychains! Beautiful prints of the paintings inside the museum, just everything! The plants are grown in their greenhouses on the grounds.

    What to buy: Everything!!

    What to pay: Prices are pretty good.

    Winterthur Museum Store: Fine Collectibles and Gifts

    by starship Updated Oct 7, 2014

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    One of three shops we saw while visiting this museum was Winterthur Museum Store which is not only the building adjacent to the house museum and exhibition galleries, but the building which served as the home of the du Pont family when the original house became a permanent museum opened to the public in 1951. Just down a shady little path, entry to the shop is through an entrance hall with a beautiful stairway leading up to the main level -- truly giving the sense that this building at one time functioned as a home.

    The shop which is large and spread over several rooms features art, postcards, collectibles, jewelry, a selection of Winterthur coffees, teas and tea services, china/tableware, serving pieces, books, and other homeware. There was a small table filled with souvenirs from the "Downton Abbey" special exhibition. I found many things I liked but resisted the temptation to buy most -- except for a package of Winterthur coffee flavored with a touch of chocolate for my husband, and which we both agreed was very good even if very pricey (approx. $14), and a few postcards of the house museums interior for my friend (60 cents ea.). Gift shop sales persons were friendly, helpful and not pushy in the least so this made it pleasant to take our time looking around.

    Store Hours: Tuesday- Sunday, 10:00am - 5;30pm, closed on Mondays
    Convenient, free parking behind the store. An admission ticket is not required to shop. The museum also has an online store found @

    If you have the time to linger, or need to take a break from hot or inclement weather, please visit the Cottage Cafe just at the rear of the Museum Store.

    What to buy: As mentioned, my husband and I both enjoyed the Winterthur coffee, but as a tea lover, I might have purchased the Downton Abbey brand as well if I wanted to have a further splurge. They have a very nice selection of unique jewelry and scarves which were very eye-catching too.

    Winterthur Museum Store: On-Line and In Person

    I have gotten a Winterthur catalog for many years. Apparently there is not only a Museum Store, and a Book Store, but there is also an outlet in Alexandria (address below), and an on-line store.

    You do not have to purchase an admission ticket to shop at any of the Museum Stores, where you'll find a wide selection of unique items, including:

    * home furnishings
    * books
    * garden accessories
    * plants
    * Christmas decorations
    * jewelry

    What to buy: While I was researching where I had taken my photos in 1969, I went to the store site and bought my mom this pitcher decorated with iris.
