The beaches were practically deserted when we were there in the winter although there were more people on the lagoon side. It is the only natural sandy beach in the Florida Keys and is quite popular in season. There are concession stands, but they are in the main building and not on the beach itself. The gift shop does sell snorkeling gear. The Atlantic side beach has handicapped access (photo 2)
bahia honda state park has may fishing opportunities. you can fish from shore on both the ocean and bay sides of the island. also an excellent spot to fish is the jetty under the old bahia honda bridge. the best time to fish the jetty is during the tide changes. of course if you have a boat you can fish the reef and the blue water off shore.
located at bahia honda state park is the bahia honda nature center. the nature center has an aquarium and shows a video about the flora and fauna of the keys. they have a nice nature program for children.
Take a walk around and see the butterflies everywhere. The garden is open air ocean side and the butterflies are all over just flying around, many different types. Check out the chart of all the types here on the island.
The overseas railroad. Henry Flagler built this rail road in 1912. In 1935 a hurricane destroyed a section. It had to cross water 30' deep. 5, 055' bridge. The top was for two lanes of traffic after this.
Started in 1905, complete in 1912, often refered to as Flagler's Folly.
sandspur beach at the bahia honda state park is one of the nicest beaches in the lower keys. located on the oceanside part of the island you can swim, snorkel, and fish on sandspur beach.
bahia honda state park has a full service marina for those who bring their own boats to the park. also they offer snorkeling trips to the reef. see the attached website for more information.
along with the oceanside beach bahia honda also has a nice bayside swimming area. this is a good alternative if the sea is rough on the oceanside.
