    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Mixon Fruit Farms has something for everyone!!!

It has a deli where you can pick up all sorts of healthy (and not so healthy) food items, as well as try a free sample of their fruit juices.

It has a wildlife rescue which the children will enjoy.

During season, it has an Orange Blossom Tram Tour where you can see the farm in productivity.

But BEST of all, it has a cafe which sells the most wonderful ice cream! Their orange ice cream is scrummy-licious! Also in the cafe is a world map where you can pin to show where you've visited from.

All in all, its a wonderful location with plenty to see and do and also to taste and smell!!! Of course, the best time to visit is during the orange harvest, but if you're not in the area during that time, simply pop along and enjoy their wonderful ice cream!

    10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Sightsee the Manatee River & Tampa Bay

by TheTravelSlut Written Aug 22, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

During a recent family reunion I chartered Riverside Tours, Inc. of Bradenton to take guests on a sunset cruise west and down the Manatee River to the mouth of south Tampa Bay and the unanimous conclusion was that the cruise was highlight of the reunion not only for the sights and sunset but the ambiance of the riverboat and crew interaction with everyone onboard.

The 2+ hour trip on the river to the bay was flawless from start to finish and everyone was in a good comfort zone from the time they arrived on then docks at the Twin Dolphin Marina downtown Bradenton (the riverboat also departs from the Regatta Pointe Marina in Palmetto directly across the river from the Twin Dolphin).

The boat holds up to 37 passengers (I had 24 in my group) and has:

partially shaded deck with rain protection
    onboard restroom
    smoke-free boat
Coast Guard certified with all safety equipment and briefing
A catered lunch is available for an extra $10 per person

Costs are $25 per person( includes tax but not gratuity)

Captain Tom and his wife are great hosts and very friendly and knowledgable Floridians.

We were fortunate with both the weather and water conditions the night we went (August 13) and saw dolphins, some great riverhome architecture and an awesome sunset.

    Bradenton's Village of the Arts

    by Ewingjr98 Updated Mar 6, 2010

Bradenton's Village of the Arts has 35 local artists and is considered Florida's largest art community. The area is identified by its collection of oddly colored houses, many of which have stores selling art, jewelry, ceramics, clothing collectibles books and more.

The neighborhood was not too long ago the worst area of Brandon, with a collection of crack houses and prostitutes. Since the 1990s the area has undergone a tremendous recovery, thanks in part to the city's $10,000 matching grants for renovations of neighborhood houses.

    Bradenton Farmers Market

    by Ewingjr98 Written Mar 6, 2010

Bradenton hosts a farmers market every Saturday in the winter from 9am to 1pm on Old Main Street in the heart of downtown. This small market offers all kinds of produce, plants, flowers, arts, crafts, honey, breads, and prepared food. The area, just south of the marina is a popular spot to get your groceries, have lunch, walk the dog, or people watch. There is also live music and of course you can stop in the local restaurants and bars like the Lost Kangaroo.

    McKechnie Field

    by Ewingjr98 Written Mar 6, 2010

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

McKechnie Field in Bradenton, just 30 or 40 minutes south of Tampa, is the off-season home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. It is here the Major League Buccos host their annual Spring Training and Minicamp. In late 2009 the Pirates swapped Single A teams with Cincinnati and are moving the team from Sarasota here to Bradenton.

McKechnie Field is named after Pittsburgh native and Hall of Famer Bill McKechnie. The stadium was built in 1923 and renovated in 1991-93. The 6,500-seat venue had lights installed in 2007. This has been the training home of the Pirates since 1969.

    Sunshine Skyway Bridge

    by Ewingjr98 Written Mar 6, 2010

The 5.5-mile long Sunshine Skyway Bridge carries I-275 and US-19 over the mouth of Tampa Bay connecting St. Petersburg and Sarasota. The bridge was constructed from 1982 to 1987 to replace the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge that was badly damaged in a boat collision in 1980. The first bridge here had one span built in 1954 and the second span in 1969. The bridge suffered tremendous damage in 1980 when the freighter MV Summit Venture crashed into a pier during a storm, casing a quarter mile of the bridge to collapse, and killing 35 people.

    7.5-mile long Anna Maria...

by Tolik Written Aug 25, 2002

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

7.5-mile long Anna Maria Island is home to a trio of family-oriented beach communities – Bradenton Beach, Holmes Beach, and Anna Maria. There are 4 county-run, gulf facing beach parks (Anna Maria Bayfront Park, Coquina, Cortez, and Manatee), all with rest rooms, picnic areas, and free parking. There is also small beach along Palma Sola Causeway. Two bridges – Cortez at SR 684 and the Palma Sola Causeway at SR 64 – connect Anna Maria island to the mainland city of Bradenton. The beachfront is fairly consistent, with powdery white sand backed by anchoring vegetation, including tree breaks, that runs the length of the island...
One of the most popular dining places, Café on the Beach, located at Manatee Beach. The best beachfront cuisine is at the Beach Bistro , winner of a Golden Spoon award as one of Florida’s top place for dining and is said to have “the best food on the Gulf Coast” (very expensive, though). Another unique waterfront setting for lunch is Anna Maria Oyster Bar at 100 Bay Boulevard South. Located at the end of 750-foot Anna Maria City Pier, just south of Anna Maria Bayfront Park, it offers great seafood.. Visitors also enjoy an extraordinary view of Tampa Bay, including Egmont Key and the Skyway bridge on the horizon..
