  • Volleyball at the beach

by shalin Written Mar 6, 2014

Clearwater Beach comes awesomely alive (!) in spring and summer! Put on your beachwear and play a game of volleyball on the bustling beach. We love walking on beach walk, grabbing a bite at Al&Stella's or some ice-cream on a lazy sunday.

  • Tug Boat trip to spot the dolphins

by shalin Written Mar 5, 2014

If you are looking for a smoother ride, choose a slower tugboat. The Little Toot is the most famous one here and although it was enjoyable, you do feel the waves under you. The dolphins love this boat! The tug boat lets out tons of wake - which the dolphins use to proper themselves towards their destination, often playing and jumping in it. Cute, right?:) Remember to charge that battery and record video! Tip: Stand at the back of the boat.

  • Dolphin spotting!

by shalin Written Mar 5, 2014

When you visit Clearwater Beach, make sure to sign up for a dolphin spotting cruise. Yes, you'll almost always spot multiple playing in the wake of the boat so there's almost no need for that money back:) Choosing a boat is important since you want the wake (tug boats or motor boats work best) and avoid lunchtime when they are eating too!:) I loved my experience on the bright yellow Sea Screamer:) Prepare to get a bit wet, but enjoy the ride, energy and the amazing dolphin play!

  • Speed Boat Mania

by shalin Written Mar 5, 2014

If you love the water and speed, check out the speed boats on Clearwater Marina. We took a trip for 2, with a captain and came back soaked and thrilled with the awesome energy and views! Not for the sea sick or faint-hearted.

    Calypso Queen

Enjoy a daytime cruise aboard the Calypso Queen, taking in the sights of beautiful Clearwater harbor. This afternoon cruise features a live captain’s sightseeing narration including points of interest along the route and the history of the picturesque region. Dolphins are a common sight on the afternoon cruise! For those that choose to have lunch they offer a Tropical Island Style Buffet.

The cruise prices are really reasonable for this vessel so if I were you I'd take advantage of it and GO. :-)

    Clearwater Aquarium

Compared to the Florida Aquarium across the bay in Tampa this is smaller than small but it is also quite nice. It was here I first fell in love with rays of all kinds as we were allowed to pet the one they had. Suprisingly he was sort of soft and velvety, but I digress....

The Clearwater Aquarium specializes in marine life rehabilitation. On the second floor they have their rehab tanks for sea turtles and dolphins.

    Show Queen

While I've never actually been on one of these cruises (I'm not sure it's a "must do", either).....I see them all passing by constantly. At the Clearwater Municipal Marina, opposite Pier 60 you can check out the different excursions, dinner cruises, and family fun cruises. Some are shelling and snorkeling tours, there's Captain Memo's Pirate Cruise (at night turns into obnoxious karaeoke cruise with loud music and lights all over), Southern Romance sailing cruises, and plenty of deep sea fishing packages to choose from!

    Double Crested Cormorant

Down toward the South Beach...just off shore sits Bird Island. It's a small bird sanctuary. Around dusk every night, bird flock here for the evening hours. They stop on the beach to do some fishing or to rest. You can see great Blue Herons, Double Crested Cormorants, White Ibis, Sandhill Cranes, among others! When a storm is brewing, they get VERY loud...and there is usually a flurry of them rushing to get to the Island before it rains!

    Here is a list of some of the beaches attractions;

This aquarium is home to many sea animals who have been rescued and rehabilitated. The ultimate goal, of course, is to release them back into the wild, but many becaome permanent residents due to their injuries. Among the full time residents are two North American river otters, dolphins, and sea turtles. There is a small "pool" where you can get up close and personal with sting rays, starfish, and other small marine life.

    Palmettos

Located on the northernmost tip of Clearwater Beach, Caladesi Island can only be reached by boat. Three miles of Florida wilderness that leads to one of the top 5 beaches in the US. Hiking trails, florea and fauna. Pack a picnic, bring a book, a bag for seashells.....and a camera.
Ferry Service, bring your own boat, or rent a kayak.

    The beach at Sand Key

Clearwater Beach is a great beach, but if you want to escape the crowds, head to Sand Key Park. It's a half mile stretch of pristine white sandy beach. There are picnic areas, playground, and off the beach , there are wonderful gardens and groves to walk through.

    Sunset at Clearwater Beach

    Sunset in Clearwater

Everyone talks about the beautiful sunsets at Key West. But I found the shore line at Key West to have a blocked view and the sunsets not so magnificant. The sunsets on the beach here at Clearwater are very beautiful in contrast. There is a large pier called Pier 60 that jetty's out into the Gulf of Mexico from the showline. In the evenings just before sunset the pier if full of vendors. You can stroll down the pier and watch the sunset, or do as I did and walk up the beach for a beautiful view.

Looking at the main road along the beach

    Clearwater Beach

This is the main road that drives down along the beach. There are motels, shops and restaurants all along the road. Clearwater is not that large of a resort. You can walk the entire commercial area and leave your car parked at your motel. I was here in early May. The spring break crowd had already left the area and the summer tourist season had not really started yet. So it was not very crowded. The weather was warm enough for the beach. I would recommend this as a good time to visit the area.
