by jadedmuse Seeing the different types of people that go to Bike Week - the stories that play out on the bikers' faces....this is the best thing you can hope for, in my opinion. The bikers themselves are definitely the Main Attraction.
This couple are the best representatives for Bike Week, in my opinion. Age aside, they have a kind of scary look to them....lots of tattoos and body piercings, maybe even a little mean expression.... ...but then you ask them if they'd mind posing for a photo, and they graciously stop and wait for you to snap a picture of them. That's when you notice that the man is holding a non-alcoholic Gatorade drink in one hand, and the woman's fingernails are polished. Yeah, they had their Hey-Day back in the late 60s and it probably involved a lot of Grateful Dead Shows and some peyote and tequila out in the deserts of New Mexico....but they're older, they're wiser...and they're mellow ambassadors from an Age of Freedom and Carefree Spirit that we'll never see again in our lifetime. And that's when you recognize in yourself a kind of feeling of respect, wistfulness and yes, maybe even a little envy. That's what I like about Bike Week. Leave a Comment

morning on Daytona Beach by Wolverine_13 Based on his real shipwreck experience off the coast of Daytona Beach, Stephen Crane, author of The Red Badge of Courage, wrote his famous short story, "The Open Boat." On the steamship Commodore, Crane was attempting to run arms to Cuba for an insurrection against the Spanish. When the ship capsized due to fierce weather, he was forced into a dinghy. It was the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse that guided Crane to shore after 30 hours at sea and was the model for the fictional lighthouse described in "The Open Boat." Leave a Comment

Kat on the Beach by Wolverine_13 It's over 500 feet wide at low tide. Enjoy over twenty-three miles of beach, much of which you can cruise in your car. Beach access is free for pedestrians. There is modest access fee for vehicles to drive on the beach. A one-mile zone of vehicle-free beach in front of Daytona Beach's historic Boardwalk, Main St. Pier and Bandshell opened March 1, giving visitors the option of enjoying the beach in a family-friendly area. The area stretches from U.S. 92 (International Speedway Blvd.) to Seabreeze Blvd. (S.R. 430). To accommodate the new zone, a 1,500-space parking garage is now open. Parking fees are $1 per half-hour and a maximum of $5 per day. Beachgoers can take a free beach tram to and from the Ocean Center Parking Garage to several designated stops along the beach. Beach driving, a Daytona Beach tradition, remains in effect on 16 of the 23 miles north and south of the new zone. Leave a Comment

Nice try! by Wolverine_13 Daytona Beach is home to some great radio stations. For that alternative sound, check out O-ROCK at 105.9 FM. Lovers of classic rock will feel at home with the HOG at 95.7 FM. For today's top music, tune in to the VYB at 103.3 FM. If country is more your style, tune the dial to 99.9 FROG FM or US 93.1 FM. Jackie Robinson by Wolverine_13 Daytona Beach?s role in the history of civil rights is significant. On March 17, 1946, Jackie Robinson played in the first integrated spring training baseball game with the Montreal Royals, a farm team of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Later he became the first African-American to play in the Major Leagues. Today, Robinson's name identifies the stadium in Daytona Beach and a life-size statue of him has been cast at the entrance. palm trees of Daytona by Pawtuxet Plenty of palm trees around Daytona. Live oaks dripping with Spanish moss....all sorts of big old pine trees too. Once you remove yourself from the "main drags" and all the traffic, hotels, and madness....there are many very pleasantly planted roads and neighborhoods to enjoy the natural beauty of Daytona. This scene of Embry Riddle Campus gives you a taste of the palm trees.....and the one waving belongs to me. :-) Leave a Comment

Happy days in Daytona ~ 1995 by Pawtuxet Christopher, the graduate, is on the left with beard. He cut off his long hair just prior to graduation and the beard went when it was time to find a job. Brother and sister were along for support....or aggitation....wherever their moods took them. These three are sometimes very funny when they get together after long periods of separation. All our kids have enjoyed Daytona over the years with their various interests...and have been in and out of that town since early childhood.
My fondest memory is without a doubt...my son's graduation. However, we had lots of wonderful days on the beach when the kids were young. Leave a Comment

So drink in the pool!!! by Wolverine_13 Drinking is not permitted on the beach at any time. Volusia County Beach Patrol officers strictly enforce the no drinking rule. Besides, there are plenty of other things to do while the sun is up!! Leave a Comment
