Around 1946 this was published as "The world's largest bandshell by the sea at Daytona Beach". It was built in 1938 by the Works Progress Administration in 1938, it is composed of entirely of coquina rock, from the Atlantic Ocean in Flagler County. It is now a location for a free concerts sponsored by Friends of the Bandshell. Leave a Comment Address: Oceanfront Park 300 block AIAPhone: (386) 671-3420

Daytona Speedway is of course, famous for its NASCAR racing and the reknown Daytona 500 competition. However, during Bike Week, the Speedway is open to enthusiasts who want to get a close up view of dirt bike races and other competitions. Around the grounds outside the Speedway arena, you'll find vendors and motorcycle manufacturers like Yamaha, Suzuki, Triumph and of course, Harley Davidson...all displaying their latest designs and bikes. This historic lighthouse is located at the southernmost point of Daytona's 23-mile-long beach. The tower was completed in 1886. It stands 175 feet tall, the second tallest lighthouse in the USA. Climbing to the top is a great exercise, especially during the summer! Once you get to the top, the view is gorgeous. And, oh, that breeze!!! :-) Leave a Comment

As mentioned in the Intro Page, the people-watching doesn't get any better than here in Daytona during Bike Week. Go with an open mind and a good sense of humor. I guarantee, there's something hysterical for everyone! (click on photo for proper perspective) Leave a Comment

Within the category of "urban beaches of Florida," Daytona has one of the best. The "beach" actually stretches about 25 miles through several adjoining towns. Young people congregate near the Daytona pier; retirees and families prefer the Ormond or D.B. Shores sections. To drive a car onto the beach costs $5. Entrance ramps are found along Route A1A about every quarter-mile. However, there are numerous public parking lots where you can park for free and walk a few hundred feet to the beach. Within central Daytona Beach a muncipal parking garage (next to the Ocean City convention hall) usually allows 2 hours of free parking; all day parking costs $5. NOTE: If you "borrow" a parking space at a gift shop or a motel, you may end up being towed. The surf is shallow and safe for little kids near shore. Further out, the waves are considered respectable by surfers. During Spring Break , college kids from throughout the East gather on the sand. The area becomes boisterous at times, but beach rangers keep things under control. (Drinking on the beach is technically illegal; disguise your beer cans.) Occasionally a shark nips a surfer but injuries are seldom serious. More annoying are the jellyfish that show up for a few days each year. Overall, the beach is clean, safe and fun. Water temperatures are comfortable May through October, slightly nippy to downright cold other months. Beach driving is still allowed on about 50 percent of the beach. Speed limit is 10 mph and enforced severely. No night driving or camping is allowed. Most of the beach is hard-packed sand, but some spots get soupy or soft and can bog down a car -- usually a beach ranger or another tourist will help push you free if you get stuck. Skimpy beachwear, such as a thong, is OK on the beach itself, but cover up if you stroll into restaurants and gift shops -- Daytona sometimes enforces its anti-nudity ordinance. There is an historic district in Daytona which was recently designated when we were there in 1995. Probably there has been more restoration done to the homes since that time. The neighborhood is a bit removed from all the hustle and bustle of the beach, hotel and raceway area.... which we liked. Lots of shops and restaurants along the inland riverway. Live Oak Inn was in this area and we thoroughly enjoyed the peacefullness of this location. We were still only a few minutes from all the action. Interesting to drive through the streets here and experience what the older city was like. Felt more like the old south. Leave a Comment

The boardwalk at Daytona Beach is actually kind of fun. My ex-boyfriend, a friend of mine visiting from Germany, and I went to the boardwalk one day out of boredom and had a really good time. We played skee-ball (I am the bomb-diggity at skee-ball, by the way) and won enough tickets to trade in for a Zippo lighter with that sillhouette of a naked girl from, like, trucker on it mud flaps and a switch blade comb. There's also tons of little junk shops here . . . Florida kitsch at its best. You can get pretty much anything made out of coquina shells here . . . and don't even talk to me about alligators and flamingos - they are on everything here! Also, there's some history here - the boardwalk, pier, and bandshell were all built by the Works Progress Administration in 1938. The Pier is composed of coquina rock that was quarried from Flagler County. In the bandshell, there are free concerts from December to April. Leave a Comment Directions: The Daytona Beach Boardwalk is located just behind Ocean Avenue between Main Street and Auditorium Boulevard. You can park on the beach and walk there.
