The food may taste really good at Karling's but what most people don't know is that they refuse to pay their new employees for training. They say it's because you are training but really they just use you to make you scrub their cooler and whatever other crummy jobs they want to offer you when you're supposed to be waitressing. Oh yeah, they'll make you waitress too for three days and not split any of the tip money with you or pay you your hourly wage for it because they say that while you are in training there, you aren't supposed to be "PAID" for that. People also have no idea how unsanitary they are back in the kitchen. Or how they take rolls off of people's half-eaten plates and stick them back into the oven and then serve them to other people!! It's atrocious, this place, seriously. Jim and Lily are hiring people over and over, abusing them and using them for their work and not paying them. Then the people quit and never come back, but they don't mind because these people were never accounted for anyway since they refuse to give them their W-2 form to fill out because when you come back in every time you're scheduled to work and you ask for your W-2, they come up with some excuse not to give it to you at the moment. So they just hire more people this way and do the same thing to them and no one ever reports it. And there is never any record that these people worked there. Really disgusting people, can't believe evil people like that continue to get away with these crimes every day. Don't eat at Karling's, not just because of the bad experience I had working there, don't eat there because it's unsanitary and no one should pay those kinds of prices to eat food that was once being touched by someone else's dirty fork and mouth.
Favorite Dish: Won't ever eat anything from this place when I don't know where it's been.

located in the old grist mill in de leon springs state park is the old spanish mill restaurant. open for breakfast and lunch it is one of the most unique restaurants in florida. they only serve pancakes and sausages and you have to cook them yourself. each table is fitted with a hot griddle and you order pancake mix and other ingredients to custom make pancakes. a very interesting and fun place to have breakfast. very crowded on weekends because people come from as far away as orlando to have breakfast there. note: you must pay the entrance fee to the state park to get to the restaurant.
Favorite Dish: pancakes.

I had never been to a Moes before. It turned out to be a burrito place which is a franchise operation. Every time someone came in the door, the folks behind the counter all yelled - in unison- Welcome to Moes. Since I wasn't familiar with the place I was astonished when the people shouted "welcome to Moes at us when we came in.
Favorite Dish: Bob had tacos per usual, and I had a cheese quesidilla and chicken taco soup -a little over $10.

the best restaurant in deland is actually 5 miles north of town in the tiny town of de leon springs. karling's inn offers excellent german and american fare at reasonable prices. the menu, and beer and wine selection rivals good restaurants in large cities. open for lunch and diner i would highly recommend this restaurant to visitors to the deland area.

Had a quick burger and iced tea. Uneventfull....and unimpressive. HOwever the stuff hanging all over the walls was sort of interesting and the waitress was a very helpful young woman. I'm sure the place is fun in the evening when the action takes place on the bar side of the restaurant.

Belly Busters is a DeLand icon...it has employed high school kids (including my brother) and students from the local college for years. It is tiny, always crowded, noisy, definitely not healthy, and probably one of the best places to eat, if you ask me. Most of their business is carry-out, and I definitely recommend you call ahead and place your order.
Favorite Dish: What's not to love? Belly Busters sells primarily sub sandwiches, but there is also a Greek flair. I've never had them, but they also serve gyros and baklava. My personal favorite is the steak and cheese with extra pickles. Their subs are served with cole slaw and bread and butter pickles, and I can't get enough! Another specialty of theirs is a cheeseburger sub. Any way you try it, you just can't go wrong.
