Wow was this FUN! I had NEVER been on anything like this before but I was ready to dive right in, in a manner of speaking that is. :-) My hubby was a little ambivalent though. He kept saying "you might get seasick". I think he forgot that HE is the one with the weak constitution though. ;-) Neither one of us wound up getting seasick so that was good. We just had a really fun time. If I remember correctly the ride was about 2 hours long but it went by really fast. They took us a really long ways out into the gulf to where we couldn't even see shore anymore. We didn't have to wear life jackets either which struck me as a little odd but I wasn't complaining since they didn't match my outfit anyway. :-)

The captain and his helper, I don't what they call them, were really nice and informative and they gave everyone something to drink from the cooler that they had on board..From beer to soda and that was included in the price. I think we paid 30-35.00 per person I can't remember now but I'm fairly certain that it wasn't much more then that.

While we were out to sea we saw a school of dolphins and that really excited me. LOL My husband kept trying to contain me but it wasn't working. :-)

When we headed back to the marina the sun setting was so beautiful through the few clouds that were hanging around, it was all just so serene. I would do it again in a heartbeat!

On one of our trips to Destin we decided to take a dolphin cruise. We went with the Southern Star Dolphin cruises which begins at this location. You can call for reservations if you want to ensure your spot on the boat.

Not exactly the most known of the National Park/Seashores we visited on our most recent trip around the US but certainly one of the more surprising ones. In fact, not only did we not plan to come here but had never heard of it. We were happy our barman at McGuire's in nearby Destin, FL told us about it. We didn't have much time but it was time well spent with some beach combing and catching a glorious sunset.

We usually rent a boat and go out to Crab Island located in the Bay near the inlet to the Gulf. The water is shallow and reminds me of the tropics - blue and green with a clear view to the bottom. We throw the anchor overboard and snorkle for hours. There is even a floating restaurant nearby that sells hamburgers!

I saw it and just laughed -- a trampoline with all kinds of slides and such off its side. Well ... although we were a good 20 years older than most of those who were playing on it, we just couldn't resist!

Trying to jump on a moving and swaying trampoline just made us laugh so hard -- which made it even harder to stand up and jump. You have to try the long arm that juts out from one side. One person perched precariously on the end while another person jumps on it to pops the perched person high into the air and into the water (be sure to hold your nose). Oh the laughs! This is a must!

A half-hour of fun on the trampoline costs about $10. However, we found out that it's easy to extend that time frame. : )

    Crab Island

  • Crab Island used to be an island...now it is underwater, making a shallow area in the bay near the Destin bridge. During the summer, it is THE place to anchor your boat (or jet ski) and drink beer, listen to music, swim, and hang out. There is even a floating cafe: a flat-bottomed boat that serves snack food and drinks (non alcoholic). The water is crystal clear and about 4-10' deep. It's super fun, and is INSANE on the 4th of July.

  • This is a neat place. Shallow, so you can walk around in the water. The water is very calm here, so I feel safe having the kids out in it. On the other side of the bridge there is a little beach that is just perfect. Get there early, people do come out later. It's mostly families trying to get away from the huff and puff of the beach. Perfect for picnics, which we did. Found lots of crabs and fish. This place feels like our little hideaway.

  • Emerald Coast Scuba offers scuba certification classes ($195-450 -- open-water, night, nitrox, etc), equipment sales, rentals, and scuba trips. They also have bubblemaker classes for 8-10 yr olds ($95) , discover scuba ($95 -open water scuba diving w/o certification), and snorkeling trips ($20-25). They offer shallow-water trips near the jetties, deep water diving, and underwater wreck diving.

    Dune Buggies and NASCAR Go-Carts

  • On Hwy 98 there is a place where you can ride dune buggies around a track! It looks like a lot of fun, but I've never done it. They also gave go-carts -- each go-cart looks like a NASCAR racer. Great place for kids, especially if they are NASCAR fans!
