key deer by goingsolo Key Deer are a miniature version of white tailed deer found only in the Florida Keys. These little guys weigh only about 55 lbs when fully grown. Key Deer are mostly found in the Big Pine Key area or the Everglades. When driving on the Overseas Highway, especially at night, keep a lookout for the deer as you never know when you'll spot one or more grazing by the side of the road. This is a real treat as the Key Deer is endangered and there are only 250-300 Key Deer remaining in existence. The National Key Deer Wildlife Refuge in Big Pine Key is a good place to spot key deer. The reguge is about 30 miles north of Key West and is located on Key Deer boulevard. You can drive through a small portion of the refuge, which is 9,000 acres in total. Speed limits are strictly enforced here to protect the endangered deer population. Leave a Comment

This is a stop that most people will miss. I'd been missing it for over 30 years until the time I drove down to the keys with a really good tour guide who knew my backyard far better than I did. There's a small nondescript shop so typical in the Florida Keys which is used primarily as a bait and tackle place, along with boat rentals and snorkel trips. But the main attraction is feeding the tarpon. For a couple of bucks, you can get a bucket of fish and feed the school of tarpon that linger in the water waiting for a free meal. If you ever wanted to get up close and personal with a tarpon without having to get in the water, this is the place to do it. Robbie's is located at Mile Marker 77, about halfway between Miami and Key West. Its also a nice stopping point to break up the long drive to Key West. Leave a Comment

The two bridges by M0B1US Situated between MM47 and MM40, the Seven Mile Bridges stand at one of the most strategic points along the whole 126 mile chain of keys, because it is here that Henry Flagler linked the lower keys all the way to Key West to the mainland in 1912 with the opening of the Overseas Railroad and the original 'seven mile bridge'. The Labour Day hurricane of 1935 caused damage to such an extent to the bridge that it was transformed in roadbase for part of the new Overseas Highway, which was a toll road until 1954. The completed highway was opened for traffic on March 29, 1938, using the old Card Sound route. World War II increased the military presence in Key West and it was decided to bypass the Card Sound 4A loop to shorten highway travel time. In 1941 a freshwater pipeline was installed through the Everglades and the new highway was built right alongside it. As federal funds were used for the improvements, the highway was renamed U.S. 1, starting in Key West and ending in Maine... The construction on the new Seven Mile Bridge began in 1979 and was completed in 1982 for a cost of $45 million. Between 1978 and 1983, all of the modified Flagler bridges were replaced as part of the highway by the construction of modern bridges alongside them. The old bridges are still there and many of them are now used as fishing piers and as excellent vantage points with which to view the awesome Florida Keys Sunsets. Leave a Comment

Florida Keys by goingsolo The Florida Keys really are about more than fishing and drinking. The unique landscape and history behind the quest to make it accessible to tourists and residents are preserved on this tiny island which, again, many people miss in their desire to drive over the Seven Mile Bridge. Pigeon Key is another separate island located just past Marathon and near the Seven Mile Bridge. The island served as the base for workers on the Flagler Railroad Project, which was abandoned when the rail line was partially destroyed during a hurricane. Pigeon Key is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and contains a railroad museum and several restored cottages from the Flagler era. The Piegon Key historical society has worked hard to preserve the island as it was and not allow it become yet another commercialized key replete with small hotels, restaurants and charter fishing companies. There is a tram which provides access from the Pigeon Key visitor center to Pigeon Key and a separate entrance fee is charged for entering the island. Leave a Comment

Florida Keys by goingsolo There are several state parks located along the Overseas Highway throughout the Keys. The parks are all relatively small and charge a separate entrance fee. But here you will find picnic areas and boat launch facilities. Camping facilities are available as well. John Pennykamp Coral Reef State Park (see things to do tips), there are several smaller and lesser known parks, including, Bahia Honda State Park in Big Pine Key, Long Key State Park and Curry Hammock State Park in Marathon.
