Snooks, Key Largo: Disabled Customers w/ Service Animals Beware!!
If you are an individual with a service animal who is legit and targets discrimination, here is your golden egg!!! I recommend going in with a hidden video camera and taking full advantage of a potential cash cow. These people deserve a good spanking for mistreating a disabled veteran and customer. Here is our experience:
My husband and I decided to give Snook's a try for lunch today, 10/13/14. We arrived at noon and only one other diner was on the premises. We had just stepped out of our truck, with our service animal (German Shepherd), and were confronted by an ill-mannered, unsightly and obviously uneducated "cabana boy" by the name of Louie. (My husband is a disabled veteran. His disability is not always discernable). Louie immediately stated that dogs were not allowed in the restaurant. Our service animal had a clearly marked vest and we attempted to explain to him that service animals were permitted by Federal Law / the ADA to accompany their owners anywhere. He continued to argue with us and would not bother to listen as we attempted to calmly explain the guidelines set forth by ADA on their website. We received nothing but resistance and multiple times in which he rolled his eyes and refused to listen, constantly interrupting. A waiter by the name of Chris then came over and took over the situation. He was very professional and accommodating and explained that they had some prior issues with dogs on the premises. We told him that we understood, but that the staff needs a better education regarding laws and the treatment of service animals.
We had no sooner received our beverages, when the owner, a female by the name of Ronnie, approached us and demanded that we provided the papers for our service dog. She stated that it was the rules for their restaurant and they had been advised by their insurance company that they were required to ask for papers to allow a service dog entry. Again, we attempted to educate and explain to Ronnie that per the ADA guidelines and Federal Law, she was not permitted to require that we provide documentation. Although we did actually have documentation with us, we declined to provide it due to the confrontational and incredibly rude and uneducated reception we received. We asked her to please go and review the ADA.gov website. She stated that she was incredibly busy and did not have the time at the moment. (At this point, we were now the only customers in the whole restaurant, 12:15 pm). She could not take 5 minutes to access the internet (which she did say she had access to) and educate herself. Instead, she chose to stand at our table and continue to debate their policy vs. THE LAW for the next 10 minutes - longer than it would have taken to find the website and read the guidelines.
We ended up staying, she went away and never returned. Apparently, she must have went and reviewed the ADA website and learned her error. The waiter (Chris) came over and stated that our round of drinks were on the house.
Aside from the incredibly rude and uneducated owner and cabana boy, Louie, the restaurant had lovely views and the food we ordered was perfect (Hogfish Sandwiches). Quite pricey though.
Had the owner not been so completely rude, argumentative and know-it-all, we would give them a second chance. But there's no way we would go back now, regardless of how good their food may be.
Snooks, Key Largo: Snook's in daylight
This is a view of Snooks in the daylight. We stayed at the Bayside Hotel right next door. As long as you realise that prices on the Keys are more expensive than otehr parts of Florida you'll be just fine.
Snooks, Key Largo: A great view
This was a great place to eat. The food was really good but best of all was sitting overlooking the sea and watching the sunset. This was better than the sunset we saw at Key West. We just sat and contemplated the world for hours. Great staff at this place.
