Florida Keys Things to Do

  • Parks

Another park in the upper Keys which I had NOT heard about is Harry Harris Park in Tavernier at M.M. 93.5 which has fishing, swimming basin, children's playground, picnic areas with charcoal grills, softball field and basketball courts. It has very nice boat ramps and is a good place to launch for access to both Key Largo and Islamorada. The beach...

  • Key West

Key West National Wildlife Refuge is located off the western shores of Key West in the Florida Keys in Monroe County Florida. The islands of the refuge contain mostly mangrove habitat, although of primary importance to some species are a few beaches and salt ponds. Red mangrove forests constitute all or part of the vegetation on most of the...

  • Road Trip

Big Pine Key is home to the National Key Deer Wildlife Refuge. Be sure to obey the slow speed limit on this island as the Key Deer (about the size of a large dog), roam all parts of the island (including the Winn-Dixie parking lot). For a better chance of seeing these deer, turn off into one of the residential side streets, or wander back to the...

Florida Keys Restaurants

  • Lorelei Restaurant & Cabana Bar

The trip down Highway 1 through the Keys takes time especially if there is traffic. One of the better food stops along the way is Lorelei Restaurant. Sit at the bar or on the beach overlooking the water and enjoy. Start with the Spinach Dip and move on to the Prime Rib Wrap or Peppercorn Salad. All of our party said their lunches were excellent....

  • Louie's Backyard

Set amid tropical vegetation or out on the deck overlooking a small beach and the ocean, Louie's offers good value for money. A varied menu with some delightful desserts and a good selection of wines. Pick any from the dessert menu! Seafood is good too I'm told though being a vegetarian I can't vouch for that.

Usual Hard Rock Cafe ambience and atmosphere, with rock memorabilia etc. Great food, as in most Hard Rock Cafes, and excellent service! What makes this particular Hard Rock stand out, is the amazing location. You can dine outside on the terraces, directly overlooking the action on Duval Street! One of the best locations in Key West to watch the...

Bob gave me a tip : "go to Tiki Hut" and drink a "pain in the ass". Sorry Bob. At 10AM, the bar is closed, especially in November. I am sure it is splendid on the evening. This message was written in 2002 but we came back in November 2003 and we stayd at the Hiloday Isle Resort in order to enjoy the resort and the Tiki Bar. We tried the rum...

  • Bull & Whistle / Garden of Eden

What a complete waste of time it was to visit the Garden of Eden atop the Bull & Whistle Bar! What a dump! Just a bunch of loosers sitting around waiting on some drunken female tourist to possibly expose herself. The facilities were terrible, and the area was much smaller than I expected as well. The wife & I have visited local bars in Jamaica and...

  • Good live music

This was Hemmingway's favourite haunt. Now much more of tourist spot it is still a great place to grab a beer and a bite to eat and watch the world go by. I was riding my bike in Key West when I had problems on a Sunday. No shops were opened and I had to get back to Daytona. This guy named Tony who owned Overseas Bike Rescue towed me back at a fantastic rate. He had an enclosed trailer designed to transport bikes in style and had a nice ride to boot. Great guy to know if you get stuck in the Keys.

Florida Keys Shopping

  • Not so cheap tat.

Taking something back home after a holiday is something most of us do, so if your looking for something different, other than the usual cheap tat, then there are some great shops right along the Keys that have some great stuff, although not cheap, some of this stuff is very different and you will love some of the shops in Key West.

Florida Keys Warnings and Dangers

  • Feeding the Fish or Birds

In spite of this sign, people were tossing food scraps to the tarpon and pelicans. People like to see the animals come up close where they can see them. But as the sign says, this is not good for the animals. DO NOT feed any processed foods that contain sugar, salt, spices, cooking oils, or flavorings. Examples of bad foods include flavored peanuts,...

  • Construction and Accidents

The road down the Florida Keys can be beautiful, and for the driver distracting. Accidents can block the road for many hours, and there often are construction projects along the way which also hold up traffic. Except for a short stretch in the upper keys where there is a toll road that parallels US 1, there is only one road in or out of the Keys....

  • Traffic cops

Every one will warn you about the traffic police and here is another warning. They hide in the verges of the Overseas Highway, you cannot see them until you are close. Stick to the speed limit which is at times a frustrating 30mph especially in the dark, there is no escape.

Florida Keys Tourist Traps

  • Tourist Information

We called in at a Tourist Information in Key West, and from the minute we started talking to the staff, it was obvious that they were there to promote certain hotels and things to do, as there was money in this for them. And as soon as it was evident that all we wanted was information on areas and Key Lime Pie, and not interested in the snorkeling...

  • Higher prices if your not from the US!!!

That's right, I didn't like this. Before we left the UK we planned on booking a cruise out of Miami for a few days, but, the prices we found were lower if you lived in the USA. How can that be, this isnt a Third World country, this is America, America! So, we didn't book the cruise because of that. And it got worse. Whe we arrived, we saw adverts...

Florida Keys What to Pack

  • Sun Block is your Best Friend

Spirit Air has changed their baggage policy. One checked bag per person or pay $10 for each additional bag. Packing our fishing rods cost us $10 each way. Since we brought tackle with us and it had to be checked there was little room for clothes. Fortunately shorts and T-shirts don't take up much room. The weather in the Keys is usually very mild...

  • Protect your skin!

SUNBLOCK, (48SPF) SHOULD DO IT!You will STILL tan! Thr sun is not very forgiving in the Keys so you must protect your skin from sunburn. Even with SPF48 you will still get burned, just not as bad. Also bring lots of bottled water, if you freeze the water in a bottle the ice will take some time to melt and you'll have ice water to cool you down!

Top 10 Coastal Drives: Florida Keys

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

The Overseas Highway is the portion of US Route 1 that extends from the end of mainland Florida through the Florida Keys to southernmost Key West. The route runs 160 miles (257 km) from Miami to Key West, with large portions of the highway built on bridges left over from the long-forgotten Overseas Railroad. While the primary view seen along this drive are the bright blue waters of the Florida Straits, the waters between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, the Keys are actually exposed ancient coral reefs leading to varied wildlife and much ecotourism. The Keys have an interesting spirit of their own and it's definitely worth pulling off the route to explore some of the individual island's personalities.
