Florida Keys by goingsolo Hurricane season runs from June 1 until November 30. The active portion of the season is August through September, although storms are possible after and, even more rare, before that period. The Keys are very narrow and surrounded by water on both sides. For that reason, it is considered unsafe to be here when a storm is threatening. If there is a Hurricane Watch posted (meaning that hurricane conditions are possible in about 48 hours), there is a mandatory evacuation for all tourists in the Keys. This evacuation may begin even earlier as there is only one main road into and out of the Keys. If you plan on visiting during these months, pay attention to weather forecasts prior to your trip and have a plan in place for leaving the area, including an idea of where you will stay. I'm pretty sure that hotels in the Keys will make you leave once a warning is posted. Remember that the Keys are very close to the mainland, so if there is a hurricane threatening this area, chances are South Florida will be under a similar watch or warning, meaning that hotels will be booked up and supplies and gas will be tough to find. You may find yourself spending your vacation at a hurricane shelter, which is less than ideal. Keep this in mind if you plan to visit during these months. Leave a Comment

Man-O-War by tpangelinan Man-O-War, can be very painful so what the kids around these! The Man-O-War has long tenticals that reach a few feet long. If you really must swim here, take the Adolph's Meat Tenderizer, I hear that takes the sting out on the way to the hospital. Leave a Comment

Hurricanes by MikeAtSea In the Florida Keys, the same forces that create balmy breezes and warm waves also can bring high winds, heavy rain and tidal surges. Because they are on the northern fringe of the Caribbean, the Florida Keys occasionally are threatened by tropical cyclones and hurricanes. The Atlantic hurricane season formally begins June 1 and ends November 30. Historically, the chances of hurricane activity are greater between August 15 and October 1. During the past 100 years, the historical average frequency of a hurricane impacting somewhere in the state of Florida is once every two years. Evacuation routes and shelters are available and one should not really worry about the impact of a hurricane, since everyone would be informed well in advance! Leave a Comment

Driving to Key West from Miami, and especially the drive back, can be annoying at times. Traffic and drivers can be very bad. There is always police around to enforce the speed limit, and you don't want to spoil your vacation in the Keys by getting a ticket. Drunk driving is a definite no-no. As for the drive back from Key West to Miami, try to time it around 5pm, so you can stop on the way in a nice restaurant and enjoy the sunset. This helps you to break the drive in two. Every one will warn you about the traffic police and here is another warning. They hide in the verges of the Overseas Highway, you cannot see them until you are close. Stick to the speed limit which is at times a frustrating 30mph especially in the dark, there is no escape. Leave a Comment

If anyone is interested in renting the property Moon Over Paradise there is full disclosure available. Feel free to read the rental terms and conditions in advance. Go and read the ridiculous money making terms and agreement for this rental property at www.keywestvacation.us. "No refund of deposit (50% of total rental) within 60 days of rental, no refund for weather related cancellations including hurricane". Also there are other applicable charges including failure "to take in trash cans", failure to put "lid on trash can, cigarette butts on property", failure to clean "barbecue grill", 5% additional charge for credit card, $250 for date change," etc. Also, there is an additional "$150 charge for cleaning fee". If anyone wants to rent this property, please read terms and agreement carefully before signing. I am also a past renter ripped off by this guy's rental agreement.

Kazigraphy, Inc. a Florida Corporation, offered a house for rent named Moon Over Paradise on his website http://www.keywestvacation.us. On 11/8/2004 I called Kazi Ahmed to find out if we would have exclusive use of the pool he advertised on his website. Ahmed stated that we would have exclusive use, therefore, we agreed on a rental period of 2/22/2005 through 3/1/2005. Total amount due $3,635.00. To hold the reservation I was told to pay 50% ($1,817.50). Kazi Ahmed suggested I use US Postal Service Express Mail to his home in Canada. On 1/21/2005 Kazi emailed me stating that the $1,817.50 was in his account. On 1/30/2005 Kazi Ahmed sent me an email with directions to the house and stated that the pool was not completed because of the hurricanes. I responded to Kazi Ahmed on 1/30/05 and asked how the pool could not be complete when I saw a picture of it on his website. I asked for a reduction in the rent. Kazi Ahmed responded on 1/30/2005 very negatively and told me I should stay home and he would return my money. On 1/31/05 I responded by email agreeing to his suggestion to stay home and that he should wire the $3,635 to my bank account. Kazi Ahmed did not respond. On 2/1/2005 I sent an email to Kazi Ahmed requesting that he wire the funds to my bank account, no later than 2/2/2005 at 5:00 pm, and that if the money was not in my account by that time, I would report him to the proper authorities. Kazi Ahmed did not respond. As of 2/8/ 2005 I would strongly caution any traveler not to do any business with this man becuase he is not honest. I have reported his actions to the Florida Attorney General's Office and the Internet Fraud website of the FBI. UPDATE After mediation in small claims court in Monroe County, Florida, Kazi Ahmed repaid the $3,635. However, I am still out the $250 filing fee and a $248 airline ticket so I would be able to return to Key West for the hearing. No value can be placed on the cost of a ruined vacation. Cars in a parking lot by grandmaR Our intention when we went to Florida in our boat was to buy a Conch Cruiser. This is what people call a car which runs OK, but looks like it is on its last legs. In the salt environment of the Keys, the car bodies rust out before the engine goes. But we found that in addition to the initial cost, plus registration fees, taxes and insurance we had to pay an additional Florida "gotcha" fee of $100.00 for the first vehicle registered in Florida. "Section 320.072, Florida Statutes, requires a fee of $100 to be imposed upon the initial application for registration on certain motor vehicle registration transactions. Whether the vehicle is new or used doesn't matter. Basically, the fee is due on any private-use automobile, any lightweight truck, or any motor home unless the vehicle being registered is a replacement for a vehicle that has been disposed in the same category of vehicles." That would mean that a car we bought for $700 would actually cost us about $1000, of which $300 for taxes, registration and one-time fee would be non-recoverable. We could rent a car for a week for about $145, once a month and for 3 months, that would be only about $450.00. So we made do with bikes. Leave a Comment
