    Parking prices

by DSwede Written Feb 17, 2013

Parking can be a bit problematic, particularly if there is a big event or tournament in town. There are lots of parking lots a few streets off the beach that will usually have an attendant and charge on an hourly rate.

However, there are a few that don't even understand the concept. How can complimentary be $8?? mmmm

Fun Alternatives: Don't have a car in town unless you need one. For the average visitor, most things on the agenda are within walking distance.

    The Swap Shop

by goingsolo Written Jun 12, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I'm not sure how many tourists go here since its located several miles from the beaches, but I wouldn't recommend it. VT disagrees with me because it lists this place under places to see, but I'm sticking with my original impression. Supposedly, it is one of the largest tourist attractions in South Florida, but that deceptive statement may have more to do with its size than the number of tourists who visit here.

The Swap Shop is a flea market. It is a large flea market, but it is still a flea market. The swap shop sprawls across several blocks on the west part of Sunrise Boulevard. There are indoor and outdoor sections where you can buy used merchandise. The indoor area is reserved for regular vendors, those who do this as a business enterprise and who sell here 7days a week. Outside, you will find the weekend vendors, who are those who live in areas where they cannot have garage sales so they rent a table here and sell their stuff. I would say junk but, well, one mans trash is another's treasure, or something like that.

I've been here and even sold here one Saturday with limited success. I don't hate the place, but it is, after all, a flea market. Not something I'd want to do on my vacation.

Unique Suggestions: Go to the drive in movie. Actually, this is pretty cool. The Swap Shop actually began as the Thunderbird Drive in. Now, there are 14 separate screens and some of the latest releases are shown. Prices are cheap too. You don't see too many drive in movie theatres these days, so if you have a car and you are up for some nostalgia, this is worth checking out.

Fun Alternatives: Go to Sawgrass Mills if you want to shop.

Get a taxi driver that speaks english properly

    by Nelson1979 Written May 1, 2006

I was ripped off by 2 african american taxi drivers that pretended not to speak english or very bad english!! 1 also went with one american taxi driver and he talked to me, told me about the city and drove me to my destination without a detour!! The other 2 made huge detours, such ones that even i noticed it! i was only there 1 day but could already guess that going from the beach to my hotel we didnt need to pass the airport like we did!! From the hotel to the beach i payd 27 dollars.....the way back (including ridiculous detour) i payed 48 dollars!!! So watch the taxi drivers and where they take you cause they will do everything to abuse a tourist!! Its a shame, not even in Amsterdam or Latin America i have been ripped off like i was in the USA!
I was told and read several times that a taxi drive from Miami Intl Airport to Fort Lauderdale is around 70 dollars.....when i got to Miami and had to go to Ft. lauderdale i was ripped off for 120 dollars!! again an african american driver that pretended not to speak english! The way back was with an american and i payed 76 dollars!! the normal price!!
And i am not a racist at all whasoever, but it just happened too often to be just coincidence!

Unique Suggestions: well at least try to set a price in advance!! and ask locals what they usually pay for that trip!! this way they wont be able to rip you off!!

    taxi ripoffs!

    Hotel Parking

Many hotels by the water charge for parking. Unfortunately what can you do but acept it and pay the fee. The parking fee at our hotel was $23 a night which I thought was a bit steep.
