Tourist Shops, Fort Lauderdale
Be very careful buying any t-shirts from any place where you can get custom prints for t-shirts. If you like a shirt and take to to the counter to pay, the attendant will instead grab a 'blank' shirt and re-create the print on the shirt you wanted. I actually fell into a double-trap, first buying a t-shirt for my wife and then falling for the 'promotional' upsale for another t-shirt, where you 'only' had to pay for the print. There were no prices quoted anywhere so my (foolish) assumption was the the t-shirts would be priced within the range we've seen at other stores in the area (this one was close to the corner of Las Olinas and A1A in Ft. Lauderdale, incidentally, i checked on google maps and the store has no name displayed, should have been the first clue...). Anyway, the total for both t-shirts came out to be $100!!! (I'm not kidding). When I asked the cashier to explain, she pointed to a small sign on the side that had the prices for the prints displayed, with a b&w starting at $20, all the way up to $50! So with my wife's t-shirt already priced at $20, a 'rhinestone' print on it for $35, and the other 'free' shirt getting a 'multi-colored' print of $40, it all adds up to ridiculously high priced t-shirts! Always ask for the "total" price (t-shirt plus print) before buying!
Unique Suggestions: Always ask for the "total" price (t-shirt plus print) before buying! Ask to see a price list (there are numbers displayed on the shirts that look like prices, but are not!!)
Fun Alternatives: it's a lot safer to buy a t-shirt from a regular store that does not have any customization options for t-shirts. In that case you really get what you pay for.
These are not the tourist traps touted elsewhere on this site. Sure they are usually priced at a premium compared to what you can find on Main St., Hometown, USA (if you can find the product at home). But you should have brought a bathing suit. There are products here that you cannot find at home or would not want to shlep with you. The quality runs the gamut: cheap to boutique. At Wings, I found high quality beach chairs priced lower than I could find on the internet.
Intermingled with the shops are some quality restaurants as well.
the strip has all kinds of t-shirt and beach wear shops, most are overpriced and if not, terrible quality, bring your own clothes and supplies from home.
Unique Suggestions: stick to the brand name stores.
Fun Alternatives: come prepared, bring your own gear
