Fort Matanzas

Although the Fort itself did not participate in any battles, the area was not without strife and conflict. In the 1500's, a group of 250 French settlers were massacred by Spanish forces. This plaque marks the area where this massacre took place. Following the killing of the French settlers, the area became known as Matanzas, which is the Spamosj word for massacre.

Fort Matanzas

The rebuilt Fort was constructed from coquina shells. It is the only fort that bears this distinction. For some reason, the shells protect against the elements and prevent destruction during storms.
