gilbert's bar house of refuge was built in 1876 as a shipwreak life saving station. the gilbert's bar house of refuge is the only remaining house of refuge on florida's atlantic coast. during WWII the house of refuge was a look out post for spotting german submarines. today the house of refuge is owned by the martin county historical society and is a museum of florida history. for those interested in architecture and florida histroy the gilbert's bar house of refuge is a very worthwhile place to visit. gilbert's bar house of refuge is listed on the national register of historic places. for more infoemation see the attached web site.

jensen beach has a very nice public beach located on hutchinson island twenty miles south of fort pierce. jensen beach park has free parking and a restaurant and bar. jensen beach is one of the nicest beaches in the fort pierce-stuart area. from fort pierce take US A1A south twenty miles to jensen beach.

located at the gilbert's bar house of refuge is ross witham beach. at ross witham beach is an exposed section of the anastasia formation. the anastasia formation runs along the atlantic coast from st. augustine to the north to palm beach county in the south. the anatasia formation was created during the pleistocene era and is formation of fragmented mollusk shells and sand cemented by sparry calcite. this ancient geological formation is will worth a look when visiting hutchinson island near fort pierce. from fort pierce take US A1A twenty miles south to jensen beach. at the mariott resort take mac arthur blvd south to ross witham beach.

Or so that is my opinion...... The Inlet State Park on North Hutchinson Island is the most beautiful stretch of beach on the east coast. They have picnic tables, grills and restroom facilities. You can hike around for the wildlife, play in the surf, fish off the jetty or just float around on the cove side. Naturally low tide is the best time. There is also a play area for the kids. If you are there at the right time you can see or swim with a few of the local Manatee on the Cove side.

Besides the fact that Fort Pierce itself is already 'off-the-beaten'-path, this tip is even more 'strange'. At night (not even only in the right season) things happen on the beach. Besides the great sky full of stars, little crabs ('wenkkrabbetjes') come to gather food. With their one big pink arm they make waving movements or even pick up fights with one-another about a girl or their territory. Hmm, how human some animals behave (-:
