For several months during the summer/spring Lovebugs abound. The exact date varies for some reason...depending on rain I've heard....This year they were particularly bad in mid/late September
These totally horrible annoying creatures are really flies but are called "lovebugs" because they mate and stay attached for pretty much their entire adult life.
The annoying little creatures even fly "attached" and seem to be a abundance along the highway and their squashed bodies will quickly collect on your front grill and windshield.
While the bugs don't bite or sting they are hell on automobile paint and if you let them "dry" for more than a few hours they are quite difficult to remove. So if your on the road in Florida during the season....stop over often and wash your front windows at the very least.
The local legend of the Lovebug is that a University of Florida professor created and then released in an experiment gone very wrong.....as an FSU (Florida State University...for those of you not from the south these two colleges are huge rivals) graduate I'd love to spread this story ...but it is in fact a myth.
Gainesville is a relatively safe place. Rumors that it is a dangerous place began with the serial killer that killed 5 people back in 1990 and the freak act of random violence that killed a college student back in 2000. Otherwise Gainesville is a great place to stay out until the bars closes at 2:00. The only place that I would avoid late at night if I am by myself is East Gainesville. Otherwise, the rest of the city is very nice.
gainesville is a very safe place to visit for the tourist. gainesville does have some crime area that you should avoid. seach gainesville on the attached web site for area crime statstics.
