  • Barefoot Beach Preserve, Bonita Beach - Florida
    Barefoot Beach Preserve,
    Bonita Beach
    by deecat
Barefoot Beach Preserve is a 342 acre barrier island separated from the mainland by mangrove swamps and tidal creeks. this area is bordered on the West by almost two miles of Gulf beach that terminates at Wiggins Pass to the South.
Sadly, it is one of the last stretches of undeveloped beachfront lands in South Florida. It remains as natural and as unspoiled as it appeared hundreds of years ago.
It's a great place to hunt for shells, walk the beach, rent a beach ten ($15 per day), read, swim in the Gulf, fish, or just relax. The Friends of Barefoot Beach Preserve was organized in 1990 by Leon & Naida Eisenbud and Bobbe Hickman with the purpose of preserving the Ospreys. The organization has grown each year since then. It is a non-profit organization with about 400 members that has a purpose to preserve, protect, and enhance the natural environment.
They also foster educational and research endeavors. They sponsor the following:
    1. A beautiful Learning Center
    2. Saturday morning lecture series
    3. A mile-long back trail
    4. A beautiful aquatic garden for butterflies
    5. A xeriscape (dry garden)
    6. Ongoing study of the population and habitat of the gopher tortoise
    7. Bird Sanctuary with nests for Ospreys and Purple Martins
    8. Assist the county with beach cleanup.

It's more than just a beach. The experience at Barefoot Prserve includes the Friends Learning Center; Aquatic Butterfly Garden; Nature Trails; Sand Dunes; Mangrove Forest.

IT'S AN EXPERIENCE YOU WON'T SOON FORGET!

Address: Barefoot Blvd. off Bonita Beach Road
Take Bonita Beach Road, West. Just before reaching the Gulf, turn left (south) onto Barefoot Beach Blvd. Pass through the gate & continue South through residential area to the Preserve's North entrance gate.
Contact: P.O. Box 564, Bonita Springs, FL

  • Allan in Highlands Hammock State Park - Florida
    Allan in Highlands Hammock
    State Park
    by deecat
The Highlands Hammock State Park is located about three miles west of Sebring. It is the oldest park in Florida!
Actually, it is a wildlife sanctuary that covers 4,600 acres and helps provide safety for a multitude of Florida's wildlife, including the Florida Panther.
National and state park systems are really endebted to the CCC because many would not have been created without it. So, when alumni of those Florida CCC camps decided to ask the Park Service for funds to make a CCC museum, Highlands Hammock was the chosen location for the museum.
The museum opened in 1994 and is housed in a 1939CCC building. In front of that building is a memorial statue that remembers the 228 who died when a hurricane (1935 Labor Day) struck 3 CCC camps in the Florida Keys.
The park has a tram which you may take to explore the park, and a camp ranger is there to give information and answer questions. There are also walking trails, and as you walk, you should realize that some of the trees that you see range in age from 400 years to 1,000 years old!

I know that we visited Highlands Hammock State Park at least three times. Once with just Allan and I, and two more times to take visitors staying with us. We never tired of exploring this place, and it was fun to hear different ranger's presentations. My brother-in-law worked for a lumber company and works with lumber all the time, and he was so impressed with the trees in this park. He went on and on about them, and we asked him plenty of questions, too.
If you are ever in the Sebring area, be sure to visit The Highlands Hammock State Park

  • Dee Ready for The Theater - Florida
    Dee Ready for The Theater
    by deecat
Theater is not a word one associates with Florida very often, but we should.
In all the places that we have visited in the state, theater is alive and well.
I remember being in Naples, Floriday and seeing Jerry Lewis perform in Damn Yankees.
But, one of my fondest memories was one Saturday night during our stay in Bonita Springs when we went to Mann Hall in Fort Myers to see the Broadway musical, "Jesus Christ Superstar". The 2003-2004 season included: Mamma Mia!, Miss Saigon, Jesus Christ Superstar, Dame Edna, The Graduate, 42nd Street, Bill Cosby, Anne Murray, Willie Nelson, The Four Tops, Ann Margret, Debbie Reynolds, Goldie Hawn, The Doobie Brothers, Bryan Adams, Don Rickles, The Lord of the Dance, The beach Boys, and The Nutcracker (Sarasota Ballet and Florida Symphony and Chorus).

So, you can see that this is not lightweight theater; it's the big time.

Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall is a facility of Edison Community College

This theater has elevators, full service bars, handicapped parking, restrooms, and infrared listening systems.

Theater in Florida means dressing up; you don't see jeans, short, sweatshirts, etc. at theaters here. Note in the photograph that I am wearing a dress.

During the Second Seminole War, Fort Gatlin was built near what would one day become Orlando. However, the fort was abandoned shortly after the war ended, and there was little population in the area. Eventually, though, settlers began establishing cattle ranches in the surrounding area, and a small settlement sprung up sometime in the 1850s. It was initially called Jernigan, after the town's first permanent settler, Aaron Jernigan. Soon, however, the inhabitants began calling their town Orlando, after Orlando Reeves, who operated a sugar mill and plantation about 30 miles (50 kilometers) to the north. He had carved his name into a tree near where the town was established, and thinking it marked his grave, people called the area "Orlando's Grave," and eventually just "Orlando".

Between 1875 and 1895, the area became the center of Florida's citrus industry, and cattle ranching became less important to the local economy. In the 1920s, Orlando experienced a real estate boom, but it never became an important city.

However, in 1965, Walt Disney announced plans to build Disney World near Orlando. He chose the city for its inland location, making it less susceptible to hurricanes than Florida's larger coastal cities. In 1971, Disney World opened and Orlando immediately experienced explosive economic and population growth. Tourism quickly became the basis of the local economy, and Orlando is now consistently ranked as one of the top vacation destinations in the world. The metropolitan area has more theme parks and entertainment attractions than anywhere else in the world. With over 52,000,000 tourists per year, Orlando has the second-largest number of hotel rooms in the United States, after Las Vegas. The city is also one of the most popular places for conventions and conferences.

Nowadays, the Orlando metropolitan area has about 2,720,000 inhabitants, making it the third-largest in Florida, after Miami and Tampa.

The sun here shines pretty bright, especially during the summer. Even on some days when it doesn't seem that hot, if you're fair-skinned you should make sure you have some good sun lotion on you to protect you. Sunburns are harmful to the skin, will turn it red and even cause it to peel off.
Just make sure that between May and September you put sunlotion on any part of your body that wil be exposed to the sun. You'll be glad you did.

  • I am in the waves - Florida
    I am in the waves
    by OlenaKyiv
I like waves, much water, warm water and nice sand.
You may swim on the deep water, just watch out crazy life guards who whistle to you all the time giving you to know that you are too far in the ocean.
You may swim in shallow water... oops... did I tell swim? Crawl will be more exact word. Moreover after crawling you will colect much sand in your swimming suit to bring it back home for memories about Florida.
You may jump on, glide on and dive in the waves. You won't have this enjoyment on the lake or river. mmm... I like ocean!

    Small Airboat

Do airboating in Everglades (not the national park area) and on Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho for short) and see the wildlife of Florida like alligators and their hatchlings, whooping cranes, Herons, Coots, Bald Eagle, etc. If you go to Florida and miss on airboating, then you have missed a lot. Trust me.

We planned a trip off-season i.e. in January. Every body said and we confirm that end of January is the best season to visit Florida, because weather is extremely good, there are no holidays and therefore, less tourists. You can find theme parks and natural reserves very receptive.
