Visiting Florida's Gulf Coast

by MarkStephenson761

The Gulf Coast is really the best part of Florida..or else we wouldn't live here! There are some great places to stay on the beach from St. Pete down to Sarasota with lots of little communities you'll love shopping in. You can check out Gulf Port, Safety Harbor in the Northern part or Long Boat Key and Siesta Key around Sarasota. Either way, you're still 30 minutes or so from the great restaurants, museums and nightlife in Tampa. You might stay at the Don Cesar for a nice art deco, upscale experience and shop in Gulf Port or St. Pete's Baywalk. You're welcome to contact me directly for specific advice or just head for the site referenced in my profile. The best part of the Tampa Bay area is the variety of things to do and how it distills the best of other parts of the state into one spot. We've got Ybor City to represent the Cuban Flair of South Florida.Clearwater Beach and Ft. Desoto...

Owen's Florida Memories

by Classroomtravels

I went to Florida in August 2010 with my Mom, Dad and brothers. The weather was very very hot and it didn't rain at all. We stayed in a lovely house near the beach and it had a swimming pool. We stayed with my Mom's friends and her children. My best memory was swimming with dolphins and searching for tortoise eggs.

Tampa

by traveldave

Tampa began in 1823 when a military outpost, Cantonment Brooke (later renamed Fort Brooke), was established on strategic Tampa Bay at what is now downtown Tampa. Tampa probably comes from the Calusa Indian term meaning "stick of fire." The village of Tampa grew up around the fort, and was incorporated as a city in 1849.During the American Civil War, Tampa was shelled during the Battle of Tampa, and was almost totally destroyed. It took more than 20 years for the city fully to recover. Tampa's fortunes took a turn for the better when phosphate was discovered in 1883 in the nearby Bone Valley area. (Tampa is now one of the world's largest exporters of phosphate). And then shortly after that, a railroad constructed by Henry B. Plant connected Tampa with the rest of the United States. This helped Tampa's commercial fishing industry. In 1885, Tampa became the center of the American cigar...

Tampa/St. Petersburg

by zuhur

Did some serious house-hunting in Tampa and St. Pete's and beyond out toward the beach. Even with the recession and fall in prices, you get much LESS house here than in our northeastern Rust BeltAmish area. Choices are houses with little pools and lanais, newer, but more cookie-cutter, fixer-uppers in dicey areas of St. Petes or Old Tampa (I liked the feel here, but not what we could afford). No really great food although we had lunch at an OK Greek restaurant in St. Pete's - and I ate out for a week; just kind of generic. There is a Whole Foods in Tampa. Best were the Aquarium, the beaches, and the Salvadore Dali museum

Song of Florida

by grandmaR

We were lying half asleep on our boat in Daytona early one morning. My husband said "Listen to the symphony of Florida". I listened. I heard:A train across from the marinaA forklift backup alarmA bridge warning bell (photo 3)A power boat rumbling byAn airplane flying overheadBirds callingThat's present day Florida. Then recently, I read Elizabeth Bishop's poem Florida. Elizabeth Bishop first visited the region in the 1930s. Her view of an older Florida is still true today. "Florida"The state with the prettiest name, the state that floats in brackish water (photo 2)held together by mangrove roots… (photo 5)The state full of long S-shaped birds, blue and white, and unseen hysterical birds who rush up the scaleevery time in a tantrum. . .[T]he careless, corrupt state. . . the poorestpost-card of itself.

Orlando

by traveldave

During the Second Seminole War, Fort Gatlin was built near what would one day become Orlando. However, the fort was abandoned shortly after the war ended, and there was little population in the area. Eventually, though, settlers began establishing cattle ranches in the surrounding area, and a small settlement sprung up sometime in the 1850s. It was initially called Jernigan, after the town's first permanent settler, Aaron Jernigan. Soon, however, the inhabitants began calling their town Orlando, after Orlando Reeves, who operated a sugar mill and plantation about 30 miles (50 kilometers) to the north. He had carved his name into a tree near where the town was established, and thinking it marked his grave, people called the area "Orlando's Grave," and eventually just "Orlando".Between 1875 and 1895, the area became the center of Florida's citrus industry, and cattle ranching became less...

Busch Gardens

by booryan

Hi JohnA good way to see the animals and do the rides is to use the cable car to get between rides, as the cable car goes over some of the enclosures, you can also do Rhino rally where you pass the animals and get a guided tour from a usually whacky driver. There is also a train which goes around the park, however, I think it only has a few pick up points so you will need to get a map when you entre the park, but if you plan you route properly you will get the park done in a day. One thing to remember is that it is not like the adverts in getting up close and personal with the animals, you have to pay additional monies for those excursions and they can be expensive, they also sell out early in the dayHope this is of some useLee

Jacksonville BEaches

by harrybear138

Jacksonville itself is huge. I think it actually is the biggest city in size in the US. but anyways weve been staying in a condo in Jax Beach and its pretty cool. theres a lot to do. We got here on the 4 of July and watched the fireworks from the beach and from then on we just been going from bar to bar on 1st street. THe night life here is really cool and so is the city. Jacksonville beach is a seprate city from jacksonville and lets say jacksonville the city isn't the greatest place. Everyone is rude and you just feel so misplaced.. then you go to Jax Beach and your just astonished on how different the culture is. It must be the cannabis culture and surfing bras...haaha Cool anyone Jax beach awesome!! Jacksonville cough worst place ever cough.thats my blog if you guys wanna check it out that would be cool http://dontgothere.org/submit-a-place-not-to-visitharry 4 of July at the Beaches...

Jellyfish in Florida Waters

by Maruh

Jellyfish can be found in Florida waters, some even in the beach shore; I personally have had many close encounters with them, the large jellyfish are no problem to safely avoid, but the miniature ones do make your skin feel burning bite like mini-attacks all over. Check the beach flags, great guideline to follow once you are at the beach front. Good Luck. I love living in South Florida, my fondest memory are related to boat trips with my children and husband, we all love the ocean clear blue waters far from the crowed beach front hotels. If you visit a city like Miami, take the time to enjoy the ocean outside the popular beach areas, you will be surprised with dolphins swimming near your boat at sunset or with a lovely night sky thunder show. Nature here is beautiful, if you take the time to enjoy in peace and solitute, you can find an inner life energy that is out of this world.
