In 1539, while searching for gold, Hernando de Soto sailed into Tampa Bay. The Indian tribes living there called their village 'Tanpa', which means 'sticks of fire'. Early explorers misspelled the name when they drew up maps, and the area became known as Tampa. The first white men traveled to western Florida for adventure. And they found it aplenty: half-naked natives, tricky waterways, impenetrable swamp, and fire-brewed stews. In search for gold and youth, they chose to kill some natives and curse the rest. They brought their own hogs, cows, and citrus to eat, then eventually left, discouraged by the persistent onslaughts from the resident Amerindian tribes – the Timucua around today’s Tampa and Sarasota, the Calusa in the south....

You must experience an afternoon thunderstorm. UNBELIEVABLE! Everyday during the summer months at around 2 or 3 p.m. rides stop at amusement parks, people run for cover and wait out 30 minutes of storms! Lightening included. And as soon as it starts it ends and everything resumes.. Its almost like a nature provided siesta! My favorite Memory of Florida is entering Orlando and suddenly everything is alive! Vibrant colors, hotels, museums, advertising, fun, fun, fun! Buffets.. its a tropical Las Vegas~ really beautiful and overwhelming.
Try to enter Florida from the west side and instead of taking the main highway go the scenic route, along the coast of Gulf of Mexico. guaranteed you will love it! Visiting and stopping at the local inns and restaurants.Enjoying 'vistas' at great many places.
Drive from Miami to Key West. The views are phenomenal. The water is an exquisite color of jade. Two days on Sanibel island where dolphins frolicked less than ten feet from the beach at low tide. Also, great shell hunting at low tide. Super white beautiful beaches. No street lights at night so walking is pretty much out of the question.
Go to the beach. This is Hollywood beach. At this beach there many place to eat, and shop on the board walk. Also if you feel like wacthing a movie, there a Theater just off the board walk. There also a mall to shop, and to get out of the heat or rain. Is going to the beach almost every day with friends.
Living in Michigan, and visiting Florida, is going from a northern state, to an almost subtropical state. It is exciting to see palm trees, orange groves, and the brilliance of the sunshine, and the warm refreshing Gulf of Mexico breezes. And the beaches, the white sand of Clearwater Beach, the carefree atmosphere along these beaches, the beach bars and restaurants, where you can set and have a drink outside on the beach, and meet and talk to locals and fellow world travelers. And, of course, on the Gulf of Mexico side, the most incredible sunsets!
