Howey in the Hills Things to Do

  • Marina Del Rey

Marina Del Rey is a very small marina on Lake Harris, the 4th largest lake in Florida.Pontoon and bass boats can be rented or you can take a 1 1/2 hour cruise on the wooden 1930's River Yacht, "La Reina".

  • Fishin Lake Harris

Of course fishing is a popular acitivity in the lake. Species include bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass & sunfish. Unfortunately this lake is over-fished and too many tournaments are held here. Pollution is also a major concern as the sprawl of Orlando creeps even closer.

  • Bald Eagles

The presence of bald eagles along the shores of Lake Harris was totally unexpected. We must have seen 3 pair.Florida has the largest bald eagle population in the southeast, around 70%. Though the bald eagle has made a remarkable comeback in recent years, they are continuously threatened by rampant development, habitat loss, and pollution. They can...

  • Boardwalk

There's a boardwalk which winds through the moss covered trees and canals leading to the lake. If you want to skip the scenic route just walk along the asphalt street to the lake.

  • La Reina

Views are better from the top deck. Surprisingly we were the only 2 on board. They will cruise even if one passenger shows up.

  • Baby gators

While walking to the lake on the boardwalk we did see 4 baby gators, barely visible through the green soup like waters in the canals.

  • A gem of a restaurant in this little...

This little restaurant is in the center of town where the one traffic light exists. We decided to try it out after feeling sort of out of place at the Mission Inn that seemed to cater to groups and conferences. I was expecting a smoke filled bar but to my surprise it was a very crowded little family restaurant, the clientelle mostly older folks (ok...

By car is your best option, although expensive shuttle service is available from the airport. Howey is located approximately 35 minutes northwest of Orlando.
    Directions from Orlando International Airport:
West on the Beeline to the Florida Turnpike. North on the turnpike to Route 27/19. Take route 19 north a couple of miles to Howey.

Favorite thing: The Mission Inn. The views are gorgeous....worth stopping by for a visit or meal even if not golfing or staying at the resort.
Their lunch buffet (at La Hacienda) is pretty good, same view as shown. Hot buffet $11.00, cold buffet $6.95.

Fondest memory: There are a couple of resident gators which can be seen basking in the sun sometimes.
