The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens
Located on the river in Jacksonville's historic and artsy Riverside neighborhood, The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is one of the finest in the South. Famous for its collections of significant European and American oil paintings, The Cummer also boasts one of the world's largest collections of Meissen porcelain. Various touring exhibitions of some of the world's most treasured and renowned master artists also call The Cummer home for months at a time.
Behind The Cummer's impeccable galleries are two acres of traditional Italian and English style riverfront gardens . Stroll through the gardens to the river for a view of the downtown skyline straddling a sharp curve in the river.
Even if you only have a casual appreciation for fine art, you'll certainly enjoy The Cummer!
There is a real nice gallery of a variety of art pieces and a large collection of Meissen porcelain donated by Ralph & Constance Wark, who collected 700 pieces starting in 1922 when the prices were much lower, and the porcelain not as much in demand.
The museum was founded in 1961 with a trust fund from Arthur & Ninah Cummer. The location is on the site of what was their home, which had to be torn down due to termite damage. The parlor and living room furnishings and decor were preserved. Cummer's became wealthy from the timber trade, and Jacksonville area was loaded with pine trees.
The art pieces are either purchased with Cummer trust fund money, and a lot are donated/loaned by patrons in the JAX area. There are about 6,000 works of art. The tour would take about 2 hours average, but maybe more/less depending on your tastes and art intensity. Out back there are two very well maintained gardens that Nina Cummer had designed back in 1922, and later brought back statuary from Italy to compliment the greenery.
The gallery is open 10-4 Wed-Fri with Tuesday open later til 9PM. Saturday is 10-5, and Sunday 12-5. Admission is $!0 (a bit steep), and seniors $6-hope you are old enough.

Florida is not known for it's great museums, and this was certainly not like the Met---but it's a very nice place to wander and spend an afternoon in the galleries and gardens. I tried to take pics without a flash, but only one turned out. I guess you have to stand VERY still when not using your flash :(
The J. Johnson Gallery is a New York-style art gallery located in an ornate Mediterranean-style ediface just one block off the beach and ocean pier.
