They had a special exhibit of Howard Finster, and illiterate self styled preacher. How his works got famous, who knows. I suspect that the liberal crowd thought his art pieces; being sculptures and paintings and drawings conveyed a meaning deep from the heart. Well, that is true, but he should have taken some time to learn English and spelling. He created some nearly 3,000 "art pieces" in his time.
The main base art pieces are mostly all paintings from 1960 to current day. None are all that outstanding, and include mostly local talent on exhibit. There was a nice section involving the black cultural art that popped up in scenery paintings around the area about 1950's.
Open Tues-At 10-4 but Thursday til 8PM and Sunday 12-4. Admission is $8 and seniors get by for $5. The price is barely worth the 1/2 to 3/4 hour time
MOCA Jacksonville
Located in a historic multi-level building on Hemming Plaza, right in the middle of Downtown, MOCA is a flashy New York calibur museum proving to be a worthy modern art complement to the city's reknown Cummer Museum & Gardens. The museum, which was formerly located in the city's Southside, moved into the renovated historic structure with much hoopla and fanfare. Large projections cast on the building's exterior facade and a titilating exhibit concentrating on the human body were just two of the grand opening highlights.
