One way to check out the city's downtown riverfront is to park by the Wyndham Hotel near the eastern end of the Southbank Riverwalk (unfortunately, there is now a fee to park here). From here, walk the length of the Riverwalk, admiring changing perspectives of the skyline as you pass statues, riverboats, skyscrapers and fountains. The Riverwalk twists and turns, going under the Main St. Bridge before reaching Friendship Park, site of the largest self-contained fountain in the world, the Museum of Science & History, a planetarium, a maritime museum and River City Brewing Company, an upscale waterfront restaurant. (Ruth's Chris, Morton's of Chicago and Charthouse are 3 upscale national restaurants also located within a block of the Riverwalk). From here, take the water taxi, a relaxing way to admire the glassy towers and river scenery, to Jacksonville Landing. (Catching the water taxi from RCBC provides a longer ride as it makes two stops along the Southbank before crossing). For a romantic treat, behold the fountain at night when it and its refreshing mist are illuminated in a changing pattern of colors, then ride the water taxi to see the skyline's colorful neon lights reflected in the river. The Landing is a complex of restaurants and assorted shops where numerous events take place. The Times-Union Center on the Northbank Riverwalk next to the Landing, hosts everything from touring Broadway shows to the Jacksonville Symphony to popular music acts. A few blocks north are the spectacular Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art and the historic Florida Theatre, home stage of the Florida Ballet and site of numerous other concerts and plays. Currently, the Northbank Riverwalk is being extended east to the Sports Complex and west to Riverside Park near funky Five Points. Catch the Skyway behind the Omni Hotel for an aerial perspective as it crosses back over to the Southbank, with stops near Friendship Park and the Hilton, or just return by water taxi. Downtown's best hotels are located near the two Riverwalks including the Hyatt Regency, Omni, Hilton and Wyndham. Earth Day festivities at the Landing by noidiotsplease Jacksonville Landing is a horseshoe shaped riverfront dining, entertainment and shopping complex located along the Northbank Riverwalk right in the middle of downtown. The Landing gets busy during the weekday lunch rush and on nights or weekends when special events are taking place. Live entertainment can be found on the center courtyard stage most weekend nights throughout the year. On the night after Thanksgiving every year locals pack the Landing to see the lighting of the city's official Christmas tree in the central courtyard. Other major annual events centered on the Landing include the holiday light boat parade, pre and post game parties for both the Florida-Georgia game and Gator Bowl game, and the city's spectacular New Years Eve and Independence Day festivities. Located next door to the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts and between the Adam's Mark and Omni hotels, the Landing is also linked with the restaurants, museums and hotels of the Southbank via water taxis. Jacksonville Skyline from the Riverwalk Extension by noidiotsplease This year the long-anticipated extension of the Northbank Riverwalk finally opened and it is truly a gem. Originally, the Northbank Riverwalk only stretched from Berkman Plaza, just east of the Hyatt Regency, to the CSX Building, just west of the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts. The new extension follows the curve of the river past the Acosta & Railroad Bridges, parallelling Riverside Avenue all the way to a new parking lot underneath the Fuller Warren (I-95) Bridge. The best way to enjoy the new extension is to park in a free 2-hour parking space under the Fuller Warren Bridge. From here, begin your scenic walk or bike ride along the river with a breathtaking view of both the Northbank and Southbank Skylines (see photo at left). As you walk, your views of both skylines will change as the curvature of the Riverwalk affords you new perspectives. Along the way you will also pass small fountains, lots of landscaping, office buildings, boat docks, benches and statues. Once you've rounded the main curve, the Riverwalk itself actually becomes a long ramp that arches over the beginning of the Railroad Bridge and under the Acosta Bridge, where it then descends into a myriad of small ramps. From this point, the Riverwalk continues, back on land, past public restroom facilities and bike racks to connect with the original Northbank Riverwalk, which passes the performing arts center and takes you right into the courtyard of the Jacksonville Landing. By the time you have reached the Landing you will probably be hungry and/or thirsty, so grab something good (there is a Haagen Daas in the Landing that I would recommend) and be sure to sit upstairs on the outdoor terrace and take in the view while you recharge. Once you've recharged, you may want to continue down the next couple blocks of the Riverwalk or head back and make the return trek to your car. If you walk and stop at the Landing as I suggested, you should arrive back at your car in about 2 hours -- just in time! Leave a Comment Address: Take Riverside Ave. to the lot under I-95Directions: Park in Riverside, walk or ride along the Northbank to the central part of Downtown.

Jacksonville's Southbank Skyline by noidiotsplease The St. Johns River actually splits Downtown Jacksonville into two halves, the "Northbank" and "Southbank." Both have their own skyscrapers, Riverwalks, restaurants, museums, attractions, hotels and a growing number of luxury condominium towers. Pedestrians have their choice of riding the Skyway, taking a water taxi or walking over the Main Street or Acosta Bridges to get from one side of the river to the other. The Southbank is not as big as the Northbank, which is actually the center of Downtown. The Southbank is, however, known for its selection of waterfront and/or trendy four and five star restaurants including Morton's of Chicago, Ruth's Chris Steak House, River City Brewing Company, the Charthouse, b.b.'s, the Wine Cellar and others. It is also home to the Museum of Science & History, the Jacksonville Maritime Museum and Friendship Fountain. Hilton, Radisson, Hampton Inn and Extended Day Suites all have hotels in the Southbank. Marina at RCBC by noidiotsplease While they are a little more expensive than the riding the monorail or bridge walking, Jacksonville's water taxis offer a very relaxing and scenic option for crossing back and forth between the Northbank and Southbank sections of downtown. It's fun to just sit back and admire the glassy towers and river scenery as you cruise. When catching the water taxi on the Southbank, be sure to catch it at River City Brewing Company. Catching it here provides a longer ride as the taxi makes two more stops along the Southbank before it actually crosses over to the Jacksonville Landing. Nighttime rides are especially romantic as the skyscrapers and Friendship Fountain are illuminated in an array of colors. Leave a Comment Directions: Makes three stops along the Southbank Riverwalk and one at the Jacksonville Landing/Northbank Riverwalk. Also goes to Alltel Stadium on Jaguars game days.

by acemj Okay, so nobody was there the night that I was in town, but I can imagine this place could be pretty exciting. There are tons of shops and restaurants in this riverfront location right in the heart of downtown. Leave a Comment

Great views from the Riverfront restaurants and shops. We really liked the accessibility by foot and car in and around downtown Jacksonville.

This is a must do, and I do it everytime I go to Jax. The shops are nice, expecially the one wiht all the lighthouses. Also, the restaurants are nice, because most of them have outdoor seating on the water. Also, a great thing to do is to take the water taxi across the river and back. Expecially if it's crowded, you can park on the other side of the river, and then take the water taxi over to the Landing. "Glowing" Main Street Bridge at night by noidiotsplease For years Jacksonville's Southbank has basked in the glow of Friendship Fountain's everchanging colors. Recently, the Main Street Bridge, a blue steel, vertical-lift draw bridge that arches next to Friendship Fountain, has been enhanced in a most unusual and beautiful way. Rather than sporting just standard streetlights the bridge is now equipped with an illumination system that causes the entire structure to actually glow a brilliant shade of blue. I'm not talking about twinkle lights or neon streaks -- the bridge literally glows! In addition, the bridge's two lift towers each sport illuminated representations of the American flag -- images that are completely invisible during the day. Make sure to check out the fountain and bridge -- a dynamic duo of illumination wonders -- the next time you're in town.
