There is no need to drive to Sea World in Orlando, if you would like to see a Manatee. Manatee's are in Jacksonville and Orange Park daily. The amazing sea cow likes to travel along side the docks in the St. John's River and eat the algae that collects on the docks and ropes in the water. They are particularly abundant in the Doctor's Inlet area of Orange Park. I see them there daily. Yesterday, I saw 3 of them. They were so close I could have reached out and touched them. The kids really enjoy the experience. There is no need to have a boat. Just go to any location on the river, preferrably a dock and you will see them. Another good place to see them is a little further south down US 17 at Black Creek. There is a public dock and pier there and I have seen Manatee's there many times. In fact, they like to drink from the fresh water hose that is constantly running into the river at the boat house by the little marina. Check it out and bring the kids. It is guaranteed to be a good time. Check out the brand new ghost story book based on a true story "If One Only Looks: 85 Years of Ghost Stories" by a local Jacksonville author. http://Book.BigRedRabbit.com Leave a Comment Address: US HWY 17 - Orange ParkDirections: I-10 to US Hwy 17. by runnelspl The sailing was very good - both the captain and the boat - charters are available in the harbor and you almost cannot go wrong. Moving under natural, fairly quiet wind power is a treat. The day we went was beautiful. Leave a Comment

What better way to relax than cruising the St. Johns River on a beautiful sailboat. We spent an afternoon of perfect wind and weather with a skilled captain who not only taught us a few sailing fundamentals but knew the area and had a great sense of humor. Next year we will take our first lesson. Northeast Florida has some of the best backwater fishing in the state. For the uninitiated, backwater fishing, or backcountry fishing, is angling in the extensive network of bays, Spartina islands and tidal creeks that permeate the region. There are thousands of miles of shoreline, countless oyster bars and acres of tidal creeks that attract an abundance of salt water fish. Those marshes – nutrient-rich food factories that spawn nearly all of the commercially valuable seafood caught in East Coast waters – are the Atlantic’s life-givers. The salt marshes offer excellent habitat for raccoons, river otters, manatees, dolphins, bald eagles, osprey, ibises, clapper rails, egrets, and herons. Perhaps no place is as closely linked to those coastal prairies as the coasts of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. Nearly half of the East Coast’s salt marshes are found here. Roaming these waters are three of the state's most sought after game fish, the redfish, spotted seatrout, and flounder. Thousands of anglers come to northeast Florida each year for the chance at a grand slam, catching one individual of each species in one day. Leave a Comment
