The A1A highway goes to the St. Johns River, and from there, you would need to take the ferry across to continue on the highway. The ferry goes back and over every 20 minutes. Cost for a vehicle is $5, and save a long route to get around by other streets. it connects Jacksonville with the Amelia Island and TAlbot Islands

I have a website up about the city's bus system, at
http://lewyn.tripod.com/carfreeinjacksonville
Most buses run until 9 or 10 PM. The historic areas (San Marco, Riverside) close to downtown have the best service; Beaches have some service but are almost an hour from downtown by bus. Buses pretty reliable but not 100%.
Key limitations of system: buses don't run as often as in bigger cities (usually every half hour durng rush hours, hourly otherwise) and almost no service to St. John's County.
