loxahatchee river bend county park is located on indian town road (SR 706) just west of I-95 in north palm beach county. this park is on the site of the first and second battle of loxahatchee during the second seminole war. on january 15 th 1838 a navy waterbourne expeditionary unit led by lt. levin powell was attacked by the swamp fighters of seminole chiefs tuskegee and halleck hadjo. powell's forces were greatly out numbered by the seminoles and would have been massacred had it not been for army lt. joseph e. johnson who covered their retreat. joseph e. johnson would later become a famous confederate general in the civil war. on january 24 th 1,500 troops under the command of general thomas jesup attacked the seminoles. this time the seminole were outnumbered and were forced to retreat into the everglades. today the park offers fishing, canoeing, bicycle trails, picnic chickees, and seven miles of equestrain trails. for those interested in nature and florida history this county park is worth a visit when in palm beach county.
located on the mainland due west of jupiter island is jonathan dickinson state park. this 11,500 acre park has sand pine scrub, pine and saw palmetto, cypress dome, and mangrove ecosystems. the loxahatchee river runs through the park that offers canoeing, boating, and fishing opportunities. for more information on this interesting state park see my jonathan dickinson state park pages and the attached web site.
blowing rock park is a 70 acre beach park operated by the nature conservancy. the main attraction of the park is it's exposed section of the anastasia formation. the anastasia formation begins near st. augustine to the north to palm beach county to the south. the anastasia formation was created during the pleistocene period. this ancient formation is made of fragmented mollusk shells and sand cemented by sparry calcite. blowing rocks park has the best example of this interesting geological formation in north america. for more images of this formation see my jupiter island travelogue.
