My family and I really wanted to see the Christ of the Deep statue. If you've seen photos, you know what I mean. His arms are stretched out welcoming you to the bottom of the water and there is just a "strong at peace feeling" when you see it. Alas, it was not meant to be for my family. We got on the boat and started heading out. When we finally...more

My family and I took a snorkeling trip aboard the Reef Roamer catamaran in Key Largo and had a wonderful time. The crew was great and taught the whole famlily a lot about the marine life in the keys. It has been so popular that they opened "Fish House - Encore" next door to handle all the trade. The place is a bit cramped, but service is good and friendly. This restaurant was recommended by the hotel where we stayed. What a great place. You could eat at the water or inside where the AC was doing it's job. Very family oriented and casual but VERY good. I'm not kidding. I've had a lot of seafood in my time, but this is the best that I've ever eaten. This place is located on the water, with indoor and outdoor seating. We Love this bar. Everytime we go down to Key West we love going there just to hang out and listen to the music. We were so excited to take some of our 1st time Key west friends there and they loved it also. It's not as crowded as some of the major bars can get like Sloppy Joe's, ect. Here's a tip: On your first night there buy a beer in a Ricks...more

If you are looking for any thing beachy, this is the place to come. They have several locations in the Keys, Key Largo MM 106, Tavernier MM 92 1/2 and Marathon Key MM 54. The prices are very fair and they have it all for the nautical buff. We picked up some really nice large shells at a good price. It fun just to walk and look around inside and outside.

The Florida Scenic Highway is only two lanes (one going North, One South) for a long stretch of road, in some spots it opens up to two lanes. It's important to watch the car in front of you. Many people brake suddenly or decide last minute to turn off for a secenic view. I can understand why there has been so many accidents on this stretch of...more
I think that Duval Street in Key West is a Tourist Trap. it has may shops that are fun to brouse but everything is way overpriced. there are a couple of side streets that also have good souvineers for alot less money. if you go on duval street, do not i repeat DO NOT buy clothes there without checking elsewere. there are shirts all up the keys and...more
I know that there are alot of places in the florida keys that supposedly say that you can pet dolphins. i have been to a couple of them and the real good I found was Theater of the Seas that is located about MM 85. there you can swim with dolphins, sea lions, and sting rays. this, however, is a more pricey place. you will also need to buy you way...more

(and we didn't wear 1/2 of it) after taking out our beach bags and random bags to stuff our junk in to comply with the 50 or 60 lb weight limit we finally were allowed to bored. If there is only 2...more
water shoes - to protect from urchins, rocks etc. I take my regular 35mm, and a couple of underwater disposible cameras. I nearly always use 800 or higher film. It works well outside and in. To get pictures for the computer, I just order a CD of my photos when I get them developed. snorkel/dive gearmore

The scuba opportunities on offer at Key Largo aren't the best in the world but the diving is pleasant enough and the season is year round (though you might want to avoid hurricane season!). I dived with a company called Aqua-Nuts. One dive was on the Benwood Wreck and the other was at Sandcave on the French Reef.
Both dives I did were quite shallow, which I haven't got a problem with at all - around 10m. I remember some lionfish and one very large moray eel. No underwater pics I'm afraid as I didn't have my underwater camera housing at the time. Just this shot of me exiting the water, snapped by a friend.
Equipment: As is usual for me, I hired everything I needed. The water was fairly warm (about 70 F)so a shortie wetsuit was all that was needed.
Due to the nature of the tidal current, as well as the structure of the Florida Keys, most of the sand that you find on the beaches here is actually imported from the Caribbean!!You will see deliveries made, especially to hotel beaches, which are then spread over the beach during the early hours so that it's all there when you go to sun...more
Glass Bottom Boat tour was terrific! Goes out to the underwater park where you can watch the fish.....if the water is calm and/or you don't get seasick easily!! Sitting on the small beach at the Sunset Cove motel watching the sunset and the sailboats on the bay.more

I do, after a few years this still brings back nice memories. This is really getting away from the hectic world i call home, because it was early we had our own private beach.
