If you are up for it and have a partner or two to watch out for you, the "Duval Crawl" is something to talk about more than it is to do.
There are dozens of bars, pubs and saloons the length and breadth of Duval Street in Key West and a drink or a shot in each one from east to west or vice versa will land you in a hospital or gutter or worse.
The bars can differ significantly and not just in which gender they are geared to. All that I have experienced (and I have imbibed in many) have friendly staff and patrons. I do not go out past midnight too often though and not in big crowds. I prefer the more laid back, local flavor.
Fondest memory: I miss the sunsets and sunset celebration of Key West. I miss seeing my friends and making new ones there.
I miss sampling key lime pies and margaritas. I miss walking along side streets and checking in on all the quaint and quirky shops.
Favorite thing: This tip could just as easily been under Tourist Traps or Warnings and Danger. The Flying Monkey Bar is a bar that is open on the street corner. You can sit at the bar and order any number of frozen drinks and watch the cars go by. The drinks are very good but potent. The frozen Rum Runner is a real tourist trap drink but it is GOOD. This bar also has a web cam. So if you have your cell phone with you its possible to call your friends back home and tell them to go to the Flying Monkey Bar web page. Then they can watch you fall out of your chair from too many frozen rum runners. Luckily for me I did not have my cell phone with me and I did not fall out of my chair. But I did see some flying monkeys I think.
We loved the Two Friends Bar. We visited them each afternoon for Happy Hour. Craig is the man !!
Fondest memory: All of the nice people that we met. Everyone was so friendly. The whole island is so layed back. Seems you are in another world.
Favorite thing: The Hard Rock Cafe was fun, as was Sloppy Joe's. There is nothing specific to write.. Just be sure to walk or scooter everywhere downtown you can possibly go.
