CLOSED - Alice's Restaurant: CLOSED - James Beard Recognized Chef
The restaurant is very dark inside so it was hard to take photos. There were three-D clouds on the ceiling, and nice tablecloths on the tables with leopard print under-clothes. The waiters were all very correct. It is a very upscale place with very nice food and wines.
Favorite Dish: This is much more expensive than we normally have. They gave us 3 crackers with seeds on it and butter to begin with.
First, we had a "small plate" which was billed as hearts of palm. The heart of the palm tree is the growing tip, and eating it kills the tree. Since the cabbage palm (now called the Sabal palm) is the state tree of Florida, this is now illegal, and I wanted to see what it tasted like. It was really roasted green chilies con queso (cheese sauce) for dipping chips into - two kinds of chips - one was a blue corn tortilla chip which I thought was green in the very dim light, and the other was wonton wafers (like the chinese noodles they give you to dip into mustard or marmalade sauce but square). I only felt one thing in the cheese that might have been a palm sliver. Bob didn't eat any because he didn't want to chance the cheese (he's lactose intollerant), plus he had hearts of palm during survival training and didn't want to repeat the experience.
Then I had a Flavors of Fall salad which had figs, candied walnuts, golden raisins and English Stilton blue cheese in various different kinds of greens. Bob had Southwestern blue crab appetizer which came in a Chinese takeout dinner box with Chinese mustard and green chili rangoons. He said it cleared out his sinuses. Both of these were $8. None of these things were an entree as the entrees ran from $14 to $30 each.
I did have milk and dark chocolate mousse cake with a crispy peanut cookie crust for dessert. We drank water. The total was $40.80, plus $1.50 for parking at a meter.
Alice's Restaurant: Amazing Salad
We stopped in to Alice's for a late lunch (so late that the kitchen was almost closed but they agreed to serve us - since we were 7).
The decor is modern/island, and you can read all about Alice and her restaurant-ing past in the articles in the hallway to the bathroom.
While we were there several calls for dinner reservations came in - one asking if they could have the fish they caught prepared - something we found Alice's will do, if they're not too busy.
Favorite Dish: I will often exaggerate and say I had the best XYZ of my life, but I have to tell you, this salad really was the best - the Pure Passion Salad. Outstanding!
One of my friends got the Brazilian Samba Salad, and he cleaned his plate, too.
We had Alice's Key Lime pie (which has been featured in Southern Living Magazine), which was an interesting twist with a chocolate crust.
Alice's Restaurant: A Fabulous Find on Duval Street
After a long day of traveling, our dinner at Alice's was a much-needed respite from the hectic day getting to Key West.
We walked here after taking in the sunset at Mallory Square. We didn't have reservations, but were seated immediately. Before long, the whole place filled up. The interior is very cozy in an elegant sort of way. Presentation was very creative e.g. plates were served from what looked like a large pie rack carried by waiters. Service was impeccable; waiters were always there without being obtrusive. Every item we ordered was excellent and drinks were on the strong side (that's good!).
This was one of our favorite dining experiences while in Key West.
Favorite Dish: Fresh shrimp served on a bed of coconut rice was very good...my husband had the seared tuna...also very good. We didn't save room for dessert, but they looked wonderful. A shopkeeper told us if we went back to try the Palmtinis (I hope I have that right)...Alice's version of a Cosmopolitan. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

?Where Fabulous Food and Fun Times Meet?
That's Alice's motto... and it's true, we had a blast when we ate here, the food was truly mouthwatering and the atmosphere was a lot of fun...It's one of those places that serves up food that you will completely relish. With nice presentation and exquisite taste. A lot of the restaurants you encounter in Key West seem to cook for the drunken masses, assuming your inebriated state will dull your sense of taste... not Alice's, it's quite well thought out and tasty cuisine.

Spicy Pink Vodka Conch Bisque, Finished with Stolichnaya Vodka
Macadamia Coconut Nut Crusted Shrimp
Honey Wasabi, Papaya Ginger Chutney and Coconut Rice
Our group shared one of every dessert on their menu....mmmmm!
