If you are looking to buy "Florida" stuff....seashells, sponges, that ghastly citrus wine and such, you will want to visit the areas in and around Mallory Square. Further up Duval Street will be other types of merchandise...some seedy, some stylish. But for good old fashioned junk souvenirs, check out Mallory Square.
What to buy: As little as your bauble-obsessed daughter will accept.
What to pay: Too much when factoring in value versus remittance.
The gallery of the Butterfly Conservatory has a gift shop as do most tourist attractions.
Gift Shop and Gallery Hours
9:00 AM to 5:30 PM daily
What to buy: All kinds of beautiful and unique butterfly and nature related items from around the world.
This is a neat area of Key West . The market is named for its many original residents who were of Bahamian ancestry. Its a large area COVERING 16 BLOCKS in the southwest part of the city. It carries typical souveniers like straw hats , beads and sponges.
This is a shop run by the Key West Art and Historical Society. They have three shops-one at the Custom House, one at the lighthouse, and this one at the East Martello Tower. You an buy in person or on the internet.
What to buy: There are two main areas at the East Martello Museum. One is connected with Robert the Doll, and that area also has Halloween and haunted houses kinds of things.
If you have a Robert in the family, you can buy a button that says "Robert Did It"
The other area is the Mario Sanchez art works some of which are on display in the basement. You couldn't afford the actual artworks though - what you could buy are prints of his work
What to pay: All the prints are unframed. Unsigned ones run around $25.00. The ones that he signed before he died in 2007 are about $175.00. From the Robert the Doll collection you can get license plates, coasters, and T-shirts and the like
During the Sunset Festival on Mallory Square, local artists sell their goods.
What to buy: The merchandise is more in line of what you would find at an art fair or craft exhibit. Joe and I both bought really nice t-shirts. Mine was hand painted tank top with gold accents. He got a silk screened one of Mallory Square for his mom. Much nicer than you would find in the shops. They also had jewelry, ceramics and some pictures.
Don't be fooled by the name. The Silver Shack is a very nice store with some very lovely pieces of jewelry. I was looking for a piece of Conch as a souvenirs and the proprietor had lots to choose from.
What to buy: I bought a really nice silver bracelet with a large piece of conch. It cost around $70. He also had some nice pieces with Larimar and other semi-precious stones.
I took a photo of this shop from the street. I don't think I went in to shop, I just thought it looked attractive.
What to buy: Some T-shirt shops are apparently very aggressive and have upsetting slogans on the shirts.
