K-Mart: Shop before you get into Old Town

by Cruefan Updated Apr 4, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When you get into Key West off U.S. 1 you pass a lot of strip malls on the left hand side of the road. In these strip malls you'll find Big K-Mart.

I recommend stopping in because the stuff was cheap inside. I wanted a baseball hat, just a plain hat and they sold them in K-mart for $ 3.99. On Duval Street hats cost $10-28.

Clothing is also inexpensive and of good quality. After all it is a national chain.

What to buy: I didn't buy any "special items" but I did buy a 12 case of coors, and 2 bottles of wine.

What to pay: This K-Mart charges the same as any other K-Mart, so expect low prices.

Little Switzerland: A great jewelry store

by TheTravelSlut Written Jan 31, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Little Switzerland is a nice duty-free retailer of precious gemstones and gold jewelry and is Key West's largest supply of Swiss watches, china, crystal and fine collectibles.

It is an award-winning shop found all over the Caribbean and has been in business many years.

    Little Switzerland

What to buy: I purchased a small ankle bracelet several years ago from Little Switzerland and found the price excellent but more important, the quality outstanding.

I wear it year-round and it shows no wear, the clasp is as strong as ever and if they sell items like this with this type of quality then their high-end items, backed by guarantees, should be no problem

What to pay: Ask about duty free prices. On smaller items, the price differences are nominal.

    by Ericasmurf99 Updated Sep 9, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The wines are so unique...where else can you buy Key Lime wine? Other unique flavors include:

    Mango Mamma*
    Orange Sunshine*
    Strawberry Blush
    Sinfully Noble
    Watermelon
    Hot Sun
    Honey*
    Coco Polada*

...and much more! The ones I really liked I put an * next to them. I like a sweet wine though, not dry.

What to pay: Each bottle is about $20.00, but if you go to thier website you can print a $1.00 off coupon for each bottle.

The Blond Giraffe: The Ultimate Key Lime Pie?

by grandmaR Written Mar 10, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When we first got to Key West in the 60s, Key Lime pie was something that you could rarely get outside of the Keys. Most of the time a "Key Lime" pie outside of the Keys was green because it was made with Persian limes. Key Limes have a yellow juice, so you know if you get a green pie, it's bogus - not a real Key Lime Pie.

It's now gotten to be big business and you can get Key Lime pies almost anywhere in the US.

This place first opened way after our time in 1999. I have not been to any of their stores, nor have I bought their products.

They now have two stores in the Key West area (one on Stock Island), one in Marathon, and one in Miami.

What to buy: In addition to the pie, they also have Key Lime Rum Cake, The Blond Giraffe "Pie on a Stick" (Key Lime pie dipped in chocolate), Maté, spices, scents and gifts.

I have not been here, but have heard it recommended.

What to buy: If you don't want to buy from the aggressive T-shirt vendors, I suggest going to this place and getting a custom shirt with whatever logo you like done for you

Key West Marine Hardware: Not West Marine

by grandmaR Updated Jan 8, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is a marine hardware store downtown which is quite extensive and good. I thought at first it was a branch of West Marine (a chain marine hardware store), but it is Marine Hardware store in Key West.

What to buy: We had lifelines made up to order, but you should be able to buy most boat stuff here.

    Fausto's: Food and drink store

by Martinewezel Updated Jan 29, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I noticed on the web that Fausto's is getting good reviews. Ok, but let's not overexaggerate. Positive is that the store has a good location, on the corner of Fleming and White Street. They sell meat, seafood, deli, wine and other grocery stuff, but beware of the prices! The prices for cheese and wine for instance are outrageous. They sell fancy canned food, fresh soup, tasty tidbits... plus the basic food. They have everything, but the choice of goods is limited. The staff is rather curt.

What to pay: In my opinion ...too much.

The Butterfly Shop Gallery: Butterflies in Crystal

by grandmaR Updated Apr 4, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When we went to the Key West Butterfly Conservatory, we saw these butterflies in acrylic cases over on the side of the shop. No photographs were allowed, so I photographed it from the sidewalk outside. I've been to their website, and I do not think it presents their product as well as I would have done had I been able to photograph it properly.

What to buy: You can buy on-line by picking the case you want and the butterflies that you want to go in it.

What to pay: Prices range from $35 for a small butterfly in a small case up to $3K for a 36" round display.with multiple butterflies

    Azura Jewels: Jewelry Shopping

by FatesWarn Updated Jun 21, 2007

Azura is a huge shop with collections of designer names like David Yurman, Lagos, and John Hardy.
Since everyone in Key West dresses in a very relaxed manner, the salespeople here never make assumptions about their customers, so they treat everyone very well.
I have purchased items through John Black and Aaron Yeomar, and both of them were very attentive and helpful while I chose the pieces I wanted.

What to buy: Both times I have shopped here, I was given 10% off my Yurman purchases, and they always have a bigger selection than the Yurman boutique stores.

What to pay: I would say that the average piece is about $300-$400. There are many that are WAY over that, but I see a lot that is priced within that range. The designers that I mentioned (Yurman, Lagos, Hardy) have many pieces within this range because they use sterling silver. If you are looking for gold, you will be paying a lot more.

    Wild Side Gallery: Unique Gifts

by FatesWarn Written Jun 21, 2007

Wild Side Gallery sells an array of unique decorative items, as well as artwork. The artists that run the gallery create most of the items that are sold here.

What to buy: They sell woven, clay bread baskets. You can use them to bake bread, or just to keep your dinner rolls warm (basket retains the heat from the oven so you can have warm rolls on the dinner table throughout your meal). They are made in many different shapes and styles, so you are sure to find one that matches your decor.

What to pay: The baskets are very reasonably priced, but you'll probably want to ship them home so you don't have to worry about having them break on your return travel. A basket with shipping will cost around $50.
