Boating, Key West
We decided to combine some activities one day. Some wanted to snorkel, I wanted to sail and others wanted to sip cocktails at sunset.
Sebago to the rescue. This incredibly professional tour group was the answer to our mixed bag of desires. As a sailor I tend to be highly critical of any crew that does not takes their job seriously. This crew was amazing! With smiles and great communication I witnessed some of the best sailing technique. The captain had much to contend with a tight berth in a crowded harbor. The sail was a pleasure. The snorkeling terrific and the cocktails at sunset very well appreciated. They offer special events, everything from weddings to womans (lesbians)nite. A great option.
Equipment: You may want to bring your own towel. They supply snorkeling equipment.
I took a combination sailing, kayaking, snorkling, and sunset-ing excursion with Danger Charters, all for $75. This was the best way to get started in Key West. Leaving in the early afternoon, approximately 20 passengers and a crew of 3 sail towards some of the uninhabited keys. Next sea kayaks were unloaded and we paddled our way through the mangroves for 40 minutes or so. Our guide Rachel was great, and she knew all about the flora and fauna. We saw jelly fish, a nurse shark, a horseshoe crab, many types of water fowl, including a white Ibis.
Upon returning to the ship, we sailed shortly to a snorkling location, which was great fun also. We saw many kinds of fish, and giant sponges too. Finally, we sailed back to Key West but not before stopping to witness the amazing sunset.
Equipment: You won't need any gear for this trip. They provide kayaks and snorkle gear. In addition, they provide fruit, snacks, water and beer!
This was a great deal. For $40, you get to snorkel a giant coral reef, see a sunset, and drink as much as you want. The only rule is, you can’t drink unless you are done snorkeling. So, if you decide that you are not going to go in the water, you can start pounding beers as soon as you step on the 65’ catamaran.
Equipment: All is provided, except for a new liver.
KW Bone Island Sunset Watersports is a new charter company and they are wonderful. Their 40 foot power boat is so roomy and clean and the owner and his wife are so friendly and professional. As a party of 6, we had the whole boat to ourselves and we even hooked our ipod up to their sound system! The munchies were great. But mostly we enjoyed NOT being squeezed with a bunch of strangers!
Equipment: Don't forget your ipod!
Exciting day or night book cruise on the Fury either for the sunset sail or a snorkel day cruise. Wonderful reefs for beginners.
