A very nice, clean beach with lots of sand. Small visitors center with some nice displays and birding lists. There is a concession booth where you can buy souvenirs, rent snorkel equipment and kayaks, sign up for snorkle tours of Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary, and get some lunch from the snack bar. There is a walking trail which takes you out over the bridge for some beautiful views. We even saw some sting rays in the water in the shallows - they did not seem to wander over to the other side of the beach where the swimmers were. We did the nature walk looking for birds, had a nice walk on the beach, then laid out for a bit and swam in the water - which was so warm and clear. Beautiful! There is a small admission fee to access the State Park, but I thought it was worth it.

About thirty miles north of Key West is Bahia Honda State Park with a natural beach. It is pristine which means there is seaweed on the beach but not much in the water. It is very peaceful and uncrowded which is in stark contrast to Key West.
There are well equipped bathrooms and showers. It was less than $5 to get in and there is a snack bar open during the day. They also have campgrounds.
A section of Flagler's original railroad bridge is still standing on the south end of the park.

    Heaven on earth

If you like beautiful beaches, and I mean white sand and blue water, than you have to go to this place. Swimming, diving, walking stay the night at the campground (with oceanview!!) everything is possible! It has plenty of places to get away from other people. Look at the picture and you know what I mean. If you like blue water and white sand and not to forget great views, then make Bahia Honda your next stop on the journey to Key West.

You know those beaches you see in pictures of Caribbean destinations? The ones with white sand, clear water, and a lazy palm tree to sit under? Well, if you're looking for something like that, you must go to Bahia Honda State Park. The park has two beaches, one bayside and one ocean side. We swam in the ocean side beach. It was amazing how far out we could go and still touch bottom. The water was clean, clear, and warm! We didn't have any problems with jellyfish, either. The beaches in Key West aren't the best and seem to come with some problems, so if you have a car, Bahia Honda is a must-do. The park is about 45 minutes before Key West and cost us $5 for a car with two people. Both beaches have refreshment stands and fresh water showers.
