Trust me, it's free to look at by Cruefan If you want to people watch, Key West is the place to go. All along Duval Street and the rest of Old Town you'll find tourists, bikers, drag queens, and the homeless all co-habitating together in a tropical paradise. On Duval Street there are a lot of bars, and when people drink they tend to get a little loud. Don't be suprised if you see a fight or two early in the morning when the bars close around 4 A.M. As in any tourist community there is a homeless population. There are alot of teenage panhandlers on Duval Street, and still more at the beaches. For the most part they don't get agressive if you don't give them money. If they do the Key West Police will take care of any situation. I was at the Southernmost point, and I was approached by two homeless men who told me that they worked for the city, and that it cost $ 5.00 to take pictures. All I said was " does the Key West Police know about this" and they both left. My best times in Key West were found just sitting in the various bars and restaurants just talking to people. I talked to people from Montana, Ohio, Maine, and people from Finland, Ireland, and Russia. All were very friendly and made for interesting conversation. My last item is on the gay community. If your an uptight conservative type who cringes when they see two men holding hands, then Key West is not the place for you. There is a large gay community here, and there are tons of gay bars, guesthouses, and at night drag queens handing out ads for the drag shows at the 801 Burbon House on Duval Street. So if this is "shocking" to you then prepare to get lit up. Leave a Comment Address: Anywhere in Key WestDirections: Just drive to the end of U.S. 1

by Spacemanspiff The recently opened Eco-Discovery center is my kind of place. It's Air Conditioned and it's free (donations are accepted). It has a short film with some excellent underwater cinematography of the reef and marine life. A darkened Air conditioned movie theater is one of my favorite places to be in the heat of the day. Oh yeah and there are some nice displays to educate yourself about the keys enviroment. It's located just to the west (right) of the Fort Zachary Taylor State Park entrance. Take Southard St. to the Truman Annex and follow the signs to Ft. Zach. Open Tuesday thru Saturday 9 till 4. Address: Southard Street thru the Truman Annex

a view of fish from the glass bottom boat by HotRodEtte, 1 more photos To avoid too much typing and writing a novel, I'll sum up what we did during our weekend in Key West. Friday night - Dinner and bar hopping on Duval St. With all the [drunk] people out here at this time of night, it's no surprise that you may find this area a little "dirty." Just watch where you walk and everything will be fine--it's not nearly as bad as New Orleans where they literally have to hose down the street the next day! Saturday morning and afternoon - a little relaxation at the hotel pool then an afternoon of sightseeing and taking it easy. Lunch at conch republic (yum!), then a glass bottom boat ride (approx. 2 hrs. long), where we were able to check out the fish in the reef. From there it was on to Pier House for the best key lime pie, topped high with meringue. Wine tasting and purchasing at the local Key West winery came next, followed by some rest at the hotel before venturing out for the night. Although the day wsa overcast, we were able to see a great sunset at Mallory Square along with entertainment from the performers, and dinner at Schooner Wharf. Sunday morning - photos with the buoy at the southernmost point and a little more walking up and down Mallory Square and Duval St. before heading back to Miami for our last night before our flight. Don't forget to check out Capt. Tony's, the oldest bar in Key West! Leave a Comment Directions: You'll definitely want to get a map of the island when you arrive at your hotel. All the points you want to check out will be listed and the island is very easy to get around.

Mangroves by tattud_gurl Woke up with a hangover...but I still went kayaking. This was a great tour thru the mangroves and the Keys. Got to hold a sea cucumber and a starfish in my hands....pretty cool. Floating thru the mangroves, don't be surprised if a tiny tree crab falls on you....they're everywhere. it took about 4 hours, and it was very relaxing. I definetely recommend it. It's about $35.00...a steal if you ask me. Leave a Comment

by katmag This is a nice car, right on Duval Street next to a glass, tile and metal arts store. The car was accordingly covered in colorful tile, and serves as one of the many small points of interest here, and photo back drops. You will not miss anything on Key West, as it is a tiny island, only about 3 miles long and 1 and 1/2 mile wide but, as i said before, keep your eyes peeled. there are fun little details EVERYWHERE. Some are intended, and some are not, like the lizards and funny looking chickens that walk around and do their own thing, or hillarious signs that people put up for anyone who will notice. My favorite was a guy riding around on a bicycle with his dog (unfortunately i didn't get a shot of these two shady characters), but they had a sign that said 'honesty is the best policy - we need money for beer and dog food.' Clever, and to the point. Leave a Comment
